After working at Business International Corporation (a company that provided international business information to corporate clients) and NYPIRG, Obama moved to Chicago in 1985. There, he worked as a community organizer with low-income residents in Chicago's Roseland community and the Altgeld Gardens public housing development on the city's South Side.
It was during this time that Obama, who said he "was not raised in a religious household," joined the Trinity United Church of Christ. He also visited relatives in Kenya, which included an emotional visit to the graves of his father and paternal grandfather.
Obama entered Harvard Law School in 1988. In February 1990, he was elected the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review. Obama graduated magna cum laude in 1991.
After law school, Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer, joining the firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School. And he helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.

Roseland, located on the far south side of the city, is one of the 77 official community areas of Chicago, Illinois. It includes the neighborhoods of Fernwood, Princeton Park and Roseland. Roseland was settled in the 1840s by Dutch immigrants who called the area "de Hooge Prairie", the high prairie because it was built on higher, drier ground than another Dutch settlement several miles further south in the Little Calumet River swamps which they called "de Laage Prairie", the low prairie. That community became South Holland, Illinois and it received an influx of Roseland residents during the white flight of the mid-20th century. Roseland supplied some workers to the Pullman car factory in neighboring Pullman, Chicago.
The much lauded mural "I Welcome Myself to a New Place: Roseland Pullman Mural," by Olivia Gude, Jon Pounds, and Marcus Jefferson, 1988, was designed to unite the predominantly African American community of Roseland with its nearest neighbor, the predominantly white Pullman community.

I just moved back from Indaina and about ten years ago Roseland was not an area you wanted to be in at night if you get my drift. I have heard some good things about the area now and I hear that they are really trying to clean uo the streets. My question is has there been any progress in the community? I will not move my children in a community that is high in crime, low school scores, or no opportunities.

Take a drive around at about 4 pm (in the spring or summer) and you will see it hasn't changed much.

She lived at 111th and Parnell and Fenger High was down the street. I think my sister went to Burnside Elem back in the 60's. All this was when the whites were fleeing and blacks were moving in. My sister was like one of only a handful of black children in her class picture, too funny! Haven't been any where near Roseland in years, just brought back memories.

I would be unsurprised if Senator Obama gets McGovern-like numbers in the general election.
I don't think that there is a lot to appeal to anyone who is not on the extreme left-wing; while the Democrat party clearly has such a wing active in this electoral season, I don't think that it is going to be much of a factor in the general election.

I’m betting the only reason Wright was Barack’s pastor was because Wright was Michelle’s pastor first.
I truly fear that if Obama wins, then our Republic will be transformed into a third-world toilet with Islamic terrorists coming here for Beslan style attacks.
All the while, Obama's thought police will label Conservative talk radio as hate speech, and put many of us bloggers into prison.
The whole idea behind American government is to protect the republic from being undone by a president off the deep end. The only way it can happen is if citizens don't exercise self-goverment.
Granted, we haven't done so very well in recent generations, and Bill Clinton did a lot to reduce the will of the people in America. I think some of what you fear would be barely the remotest possibility in a two term presidency under normal conditions; however, with Clinton having laid the groundwork, and being in a post 9-11 world, there is much to be concerned about (but not as much as you express, imho).
Maybe when we remember our brave Vets in a special way tomorrow, we can ask ourselves, if you'll pardon the citation, "what can we do for our country," and have the courage to live the answer?
