Though she has now apologized for that very strange and tasteless comment to the Argus-Leader, this was not the first time she's said it. This from her interview with TIME Managing Editor Richard Stengel, published March 6:
TIME: Can you envision a point at which--if the race stays this close--Democratic Party elders would step in and say, "This is now hurting the party and whoever will be the nominee in the fall"?
CLINTON: No, I really can't. I think people have short memories. Primary contests used to last a lot longer. We all remember the great tragedy of Bobby Kennedy being assassinated in June in L.A. My husband didn't wrap up the nomination in 1992 until June. Having a primary contest go through June is nothing particularly unusual.
Her excuse now is that the Kennedys have been "much on my mind these days" with the illness of Senator Edward Kennedy, but that doesn't explain what brought it to mind more than two months ago.
UPDATE: H/T to commenter Elvis Elvisberg, who notes that even the reference to her own husband's campaign was wrong. Bill Clinton's primary race was effectively over in March.
Vince Foster was unavailable for comment.
Is this what her surrogates mean when they keep saying over and over, “anything can happen”?
Bill: Dammit, Hillary! Do you realize how tough it's going to be to make it look like an accident now?
Just looking at the dark side for a moment, if it really did happen, NO ONE would believe Hillary wasn’t involved somehow.
A Freudian slip, no doubt.
but she can't get away with anything cause she's the dorky, wonky, bowling pin shaped, know-it-all ,mean little jealous ferret that most of the cool people don't like.... and always says just the "wrong thing".
Just kinda weird.
Stop being sexist people.
A poor woman wishes her opponent meets an unfortunate end, and next thing you know, everyone jumps on her back.
I am sick of all this mysoginistic behavior.
Someone is going to have explain to me what is wrong with Hillary’s comments about RFK. She is merely pointing out that RFK was still campaigning in June when he was shot. Obama and his media lackeys are attacking Hillary like she used the N-word. Maybe I’m missing something here.
Barry and his media flacks must want rid of Hillary really bad. They are treating her like she is a Republican. Which I find funny.
Obama better watch out she’ll do it.
I actually got a bigger kick out of that line than my zinger.
It sends chills down the spine to think that she would even think such a thing privately, namely, that Obama could be an assassination victim, and then she gets the nomination be default in our time of national grief.
“Anything can happen”...That’s what I got out of it, too.
“Elvis Elvisberg”?
He had actually wrapped up the nomination earlier in the day.
I agree. You can’t say anything about Obama’s minister, his wife is off limits and now you can’t raise the specter that some loon might kill him. Yeesh....
If you’ll recall, he was shot right after giving his victory speech.
3 out of 4 - pretty hot!
Sounds actually like a warning to Obama.
