Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, long opposed to gay marriage and even civil unions, appeared on Thursdays "The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying that he disagrees with the California decision, but wishes her all the best as she makes plans to walk down the aisle with girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi.
DeGeneres tried to sway McCains opinion by explaining to the senator that she views the issue in the same way as when blacks and women didnt have the right to vote.
Women just got the right to vote in 1920, and blacks didnt have the right to vote until 1870, she noted, adding, It just feels like theres this old way of thinking that we are not all the same. We are all the same . . . Youre no different than I am.
Ive heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion, McCain countered. I just believe in the unique status of marriage between man and woman, and I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue; and I along with many, many others wish you every happiness.
At times looking uncomfortable, McCain acknowledged the necessity of partnerships for legal agreements: I think people should be able to enter into legal agreements. And I think that it is something we should encourage, particularly in the case of insurance and other areas where decisions have to be made.

Another reason we have to fight for the conservatives in the House and Senate, why only focus on the presidency? If Obama should win he'll still have a fairly conservative Supreme Court to deal with so if he and the democrats try pushing through unconstitutional laws they may run into a firewall just as FDR did.
In the last comprehensive bill that mccain attempted to shove down our throats it called for securing Mexico's southern border in a so-called North American perimeter. You will not convince me that he's not in favor of free movement of people between the three countries and ultimately the entire hemisphere because I believe he is.
And why not address his obsession with amnesty, he talks about it more than Obama does. Do you realize that's what is killing him with Republican voters?
The bottom line is that if mccain loses it's due to his ignoring the rest of us combined with the fact he's been voting like a democrat for years and the base is aware of it. He's showing no signs of being willing to bend in the slightest.
I have moved beyond the illegal alien stuff. I am more concerned about keeping a radical socialist named Obama and his fellow radical leftists from Daily Koz, DU, Moveon.org, from taking this country. Feel free to join at any time. Take a long look at what the radical left that control the dem party and god forbid this country .
FWIW if illegal aliens ever get amnesty the left will have permanent power, probably for the rest of my life and beyond since the GOP will never get that vote. It's exactly my distaste for leftist government that drives me on this issue. mccain is determined to turn us over to the other side, to him maybe it's a joke but to the rest of us if it is it's a very sick one.
No one is refusing to vote for McBacksatabber because of who we think he isn’t.
We are not voting for him because of what we KNOW he IS.
“I am more concerned about keeping a radical socialist named Obama and his fellow radical leftists from Daily Koz, DU, Moveon.org, from taking this country.”
But shilling for a candidate that espouses many of their core beliefs?
Hillary went on Fox. I am having such an issue with McCain over being divorced. I can’t help it. I don’t understand why we picked a guy who can’t reasonably be dedicated to a wife and we are expected to think he will be dedicated to the United States of America...I will hope and pray that McCain will pick a Vice President who has morals that unfortunately McCain does not have. Hopefully he will pick Romney. He is 100 percent moral. I would say McCain is about 40 percent moral at best.
I don’t believe he did take a strong stand either. I can see him wobbling greatly on this in the future.
You absolutely should! Best damn answer, and 100% true.
You GOP Kool-Aid drinkers have been using similar arguments to excuse the mediocrity of your candidates since you first ran the half-witted GHW Bush in 1988. I'm tired of voting for the lesser of two evils and this time am saying to hell with it and am going to vote for someone I belive in instead...and that is NOT Juanito MacCain.
The GOP says it believes in the free market. Well, if they do, then they should give the voters, political consumers, a product that they actually want instead of something half-assed year after year.
Moreover, the country can survive dangers from without easier than dangers from within. I fear Hugo Chavez and, yes, even Osama bin Laden far, far less than I fear the leftward tear the GOP has been on for the last eight years. They're the enemies we can see, the sell-out of the GOP to the internationalistas, the amnesty of 30,000,000 illegal aliens, the effective gutting of the American middle class are insidious and, yet, ultimately pose a greater threat.
Yes, I see that you are one of those who cannot discern the difference between criticism and bashing.
No, I don’t have to nit pick McCain’s words or actions to know he is the wrong man for the job.
Seems that with gop’ers like you Obama is McCain’s best qualification.
And BTW, no president ever has had control over three branches of government as you claim.
Quite frankly if the country is so weak and fragile that Obama will ruin it then the damage has already been done by the GOP Congress and President.
Seriously, if you have to swallow that much junk in order to advocate McCain you’re ready to swallow anything for anyone the GOP puts out there.
McCain is an unsuitable candidate for President.
Every election is the same; either vote for your candidate or it is the end of the country as we know it.
Clinton, algore, Obama, yada yada yada....will all destroy the US of A.
Joke is on you, Clinton didn’t destroy the US, Carter didn’t destroy the US ... not even Bush destroyed the US!!
I live in the real world and have stopped falling for that manipulative garbage.
Obviously not everyone has.
You aren’t the only one to have lived in Europe nor are you the only one to understand that some of the most oppressive governments in history were ‘legally’ elected.
Your fear of Obama and Clinton should not be your motivation to vote for a severely flawed candidate.
No candidate owns my vote as they do yours. It is obvious that you will do or say anything to vote GOP even to the point of voting for a man who betrayed the GOP at every turn.
The GOP is a self loathing collection of losers that deserve the candidate they vote for.
