Presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain, long opposed to gay marriage and even civil unions, appeared on Thursdays "The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying that he disagrees with the California decision, but wishes her all the best as she makes plans to walk down the aisle with girlfriend, actress Portia de Rossi.
DeGeneres tried to sway McCains opinion by explaining to the senator that she views the issue in the same way as when blacks and women didnt have the right to vote.
Women just got the right to vote in 1920, and blacks didnt have the right to vote until 1870, she noted, adding, It just feels like theres this old way of thinking that we are not all the same. We are all the same . . . Youre no different than I am.
Ive heard you articulate that position in a very eloquent fashion, McCain countered. I just believe in the unique status of marriage between man and woman, and I know that we have a respectful disagreement on that issue; and I along with many, many others wish you every happiness.
At times looking uncomfortable, McCain acknowledged the necessity of partnerships for legal agreements: I think people should be able to enter into legal agreements. And I think that it is something we should encourage, particularly in the case of insurance and other areas where decisions have to be made.

It's about reaching around out.
>How often do democrats go on Rush Limbaugh or Fox News?
Wasn’t Hillary herself just on Fox with O’Rielly?
Well, at least McCain could be assured that Miss DeGeneres would be polite. From what I’ve heard about her, she is a very nice woman.
You lot are going to have to do better than scare tactics.
Oh, wonderful. This REEKS of RINO-ism. Meet them halfway. Try to reach out and be friennnnnnnds and compassssssssionate and understaaaaaaaanding and have dialllllllllogue.
Ptooey!!
We are at moral war, folks. We need someone unflinching and unapologetically bedrock, and not afraid to ruffle their feathers if we have to, when and even if directly in their faces.
Are you listening to what he and his radical wife have said or are you just ignoring there comments. Obama ands his wife are preaching socialism and radical wealth redistribution . He said this weekend, American are not going to be able to drive there SUVs,cool there homes to 72 , and eat what they want when he comes to power. Then he said on CNBC that he was going to tax capital gains based on what he felt was FAIR ! Michele is preaching that people are not going to be sitting around w if Obama is in power. Then she said that some people are going to have to give up there piece of the pie so others can have it !He will require them to active !
Those are radical socialists rants and the same crap as his comrades Castro, Chavez, and Ayers have promoted .
So be scared, YOU should be !
The MSM environment for GOP is always toxic.
This was obviously an attempt by McCain to appeal to the White/Catholic/Won’t Vote For A Minority wing of the Democrat Party. He believes if he can appear reasonable to these people (i.e., the anti-Fawell), he can get their vote. Might work, in this climate.
Did Obama or his wife say how they hoped to implement all of these radical changes? Unless he’s planning some kind of coup that makes him dictator I don’t know how he expects to achieve any of what he’s blabbing on about. Stop people from cooling their homes? I don’t know who’s worse, both he and mccain are saying some wacky things lately so it’s going to come down to re-electing conservatives in the House and the Senate because no matter who wins the presidency we’re going to have a nut in the White House.
So if McCain can’t earn a person’s vote then it is that person who is to blame if Obama wins?
That would imply that you feel that our votes are owed to McCain.
That is utterly foolish.
Oh come on ,MCCain is not a radical socialist or planning radical wealth redistribution. The Dem will control all three branches of govt. The dem party can radicalized the US beyond anything you can imagine. They want to run our daily lives. WE are the enemy to OBama, his wife ,and the Dem socialist. McCain is not a conservative but he is pro life, pro guns, pro military, and anti- socialized medicine . Obama , his wife, and the leftist dem party HATE the US and everything it stands for .
There is an all encompassing conservative position (that I always articulate) that is agreed to by most conservatives from Libertarian to “social conservatives”.
McCain could have countered with it without needing to “defend” a seemingly “social conservative” position.
When DeGeneres mentioned women’s right to vote and the civil war amendments McCain SHOULD HAVE SAID:
Yes, but WE THE PEOPLE MADE THOSE CHANGES BY AMENDING THE CONSTITUTION and NO JUDGE ASSUMED BACK THEN THAT THEY COULD SIMPLY DICTATE THOSE CHANGES TO THE PEOPLE.
And he could have added: Those changes were brought about by mandates produced by representatives the people elected, but in every case so far the “gay marriage” mandate has been dictated by judges against popular majorities that opposed it.
And he could have finished with: The popular mandate that comes up from the people to produce constitutional change produces changes that quickly become accepted and stable. Mandates, like abortion and “gay marriage”, when simply dictated by judges produce endless division in the country, they do not settle an issue in the long run, because the judges dictates do not have the legitimacy of the mandate that starts with our Constitution’s first words: “We The People”.
I should copyright this or get a GOP convention spot to explain it to the American people.
Agree. Bush shot himself in the foot by avoiding the mainstream media.
“From what Ive heard about her, she is a very nice woman.”
I see Ellen’s show (without sound) during my workout at the health club. She sure can dance. And yes, she seems very congenial.
No he just wants to give all the illegal aliens amnesty and is practically calling for a merger between North and South America. Like I said, they both suck but we're going to be stuck with one of them. Our energy should really be focused on re-electing the many good conservatives that are still in the House and Senate because I've got a feeling we're going to need all the opposition we can muster.
Forgot to add. I agree more conservatives are needed in Congress.
