At this stage, the best thing that you can say about Microsoft's attempt to transition its users to a new, next-generation operating system is that nobody was actually killed. Even so, it might be appropriate to have a bronze plaque installed where the first copy of Vista was sold, so that visiting dignitaries will have a place to lay ceremonial wreaths. It's simply not competing well against XP. Worse, it's opening the door a crack to Mac OS and Linux. Resistance to Vista is so heavy that major makers like Dell are exploiting legal loopholes that will allow them to continue to sell machines pre-installed with Windows XP after Microsoft's June 30 cutoff date.
Meanwhile, Infoworld has collected more than 200,000 signatures on an online "Save Windows XP" petition.
Oh, dear.

Luckily you can still order PCs and laptops with XP.
You’d think that they would at least try to fix its flaws.
Looks like we need another Captain Obvious posting.
Some of the IT guys I know who were forced into buying machines with Vista just reformatted their company’s drives and loaded XP.
Same here. XP is much nicer than Vista, IMO.
Luckily you can still order PCs and laptops with XP.But, as mentioned in the article . . . MS is trying to close that Window.
I have Vista 64-bit Home Ultimate on my new homebuilt machines, and honestly, it’s not that bad. But, there’s nothing there that is any significant jump over XP, either. I’m pretty annoyed that they shipped Vista with printer drivers for my older printer (HP Deskjet 722C), BUT THEY DON’T WORK. And, Microsoft has no plans to correct them. So in addition to blowing $2500 on two new computers, now I have to tack an extra $100 or so on for a new inkjet printer.
As for the OS itself, featurewise, it’s OK. Some things are better than XP, some not. User Access Control is supposed to keep your machine “safe” but all it does (unless you disable it) is condition you to mindlessly press “Yes” extra times whenever you need to do something. Stability-wise, it seems no better or worse than XP. It’s just not the quantum leap that was promised. And I have real trouble with an operating system that uses over 1.2 GB of memory *with nothing else running*.

Vista is sooo gay...
I just bought a new Dell 1525 laptop, has Vista with SP 1. I love it.
You’re right — and how long before MS stops supporting XP?
I received Vista on a Dell machine I bought and it seems to work fine for me. I kind of like some of the new features.
Forget the ceremonial wreaths; for that matter, forget the ceremony. Just put the plaque low enough that it will be easy to "hit". If you know what I mean....
I may be nuts - but I like Vista. I got it on a new computer about 3 months ago. Very stable and seems to be much more secure. There were 1 or 2 minor bugs that have been fixed and that has been about it.
“Resistance to Vista is so heavy that major makers like Dell are exploiting legal loopholes that will allow them to continue to sell machines pre-installed with Windows XP after Microsoft’s June 30 cutoff date”
Wow, I missed that on the first go-round. Ouch.
I just got this from Dell:
THE CHOICE IS YOURS
Windows XP Still Available.
Purchase your system by 06/18/08.
Until then, you still have the option of your preferred operating system: Windows® XP or Windows Vista®. After 06/18/08, Windows XP will no longer be offered on Dell laptops and desktops.
So, basically, even Dell is going to have to stop selling XP machines soon.
