Bangkok - The United Nations will send nearly a quarter of a million condoms into cyclone-hit Myanmar to help needy survivors with no access to contraceptives, a UN official says.
So far, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) said it had sent 72 800 condoms to survivors struggling to maintain their family planning after the storm hit in early May.
A total of 218 400 condoms would be delivered, UNFPA aid advisor Chaiyos Kunanusont said.
"We don't want regular use of contraception disrupted. An emergency usually damages the health system, so people don't have access to condoms and contraceptives," said Chaiyos.

I hear you can use a UN condom for water filtration.
Lets face it, the whole world would be better off if Myanmar had half its current population. Same with China, Pakistan, etc.
If that is the case, why not ban all aid from making it to Myanmar or China. That would certainly hasten the population decline. But no, the minute there is a disaster, we rush in and try to mitigate deaths.
Seems we want to prevent future population from existing, but save those living now. I just don't understand the liberal mind at all.
Tens of thousands of people are dead - the first priority apparently is to make sure that none of them are replaced.
Dumb question - Are UN condoms blue on the end?
Make perfect sense. /sarc
There is a moral difference between killing people and giving them birth control. The better argument against this policy, I think, involves whether they would use the condoms, or it’s just an empty gesture.
There is no question though that runaway population growth in the third world is causing problems here in the US. The world consumption of oil, for example, would be a lot less if there were fewer people consuming it. A lot of the illegal immigration problem in the US was brought on by Mexico’s population problems. I think the Muslim world in particular needs birth control. We can’t ignore this problem, unfortunately.
We deeply regret the resistance you have shown to allowing international aid to feed and house your people. However we know there is one issue on which we can agree: you don't want a horde of little Myanmartians running around in the filth and rubble, as you will then have even more mouths to starve. So please accept these UN approved condoms as a first step in your junta's recovery. We also have a large surplus of inflatable life rafts and traffic control flashlights available. These might also be useful gifts as your people starve and die of disease.
Sincerely, UN Population, Flotation and Traffic Control
I am freakin’ speechless. Who thinks of these things, monkeys sipping cuervo in a tree? How, how, how does one conclude that starving, ailing, homeless, parentless people need condoms?
Perfect example of the UN thought process. Me myself I just cannot imagine a survivor of that Cyclone wandering around thinking “A condom, I need to find a condom”
The Myanmar government shares your belief. So, who dies first?
Where there are problems the UN only sees “opportunity”!!
Enjoy your baloon animal seminars.
In the midst of disaster .. only the liberals would be thinking about sex.
Is it just me or does anyone else find it funny that this report about condoms etc cums to us from Bankok ??
My kingdom for a condom.
Priorities, doncha know...
That is a despicably evil idea. We need single every eternal soul that God has created for his purposes and not ours. But besides that, from a purely economical perspective, people are the most valuable resource on earth. People are the means of production and consumption that drive the world's economy. Additionally, and maybe more importantly, people discover, invent, adapt and create even in slavery and other suboptimal conditions. Who are you or anyone else to say we would be better off with less. Why don't you volunteer to go first?
Lets face it, the whole world would be better off if Myanmar had half its current population government. Same with China, Pakistan, etc. And that goes for the United States too!

Hey! They make a great soup.
