Ted Kennedy has made clear to confidants that when his time is up, he wants his Senate seat to stay in the family - with his wife, Vicki.
Multiple sources in Massachusetts with close ties to the liberal lion say his wife of 16 years has long been his choice to continue carrying the family flame in the Senate. Kennedy won the seat in 1962; his brother John held it from 1953 to 1960.
"There's no question that he'd like Vicki to continue in his seat," said one Massachusetts Democrat with ties to the Camelot clan who spoke to Kennedy recently, before his health crisis.
"She's smart, and smart politically."
The 54-year-old Victoria Reggie Kennedy, a former hotshot Washington lawyer, is a Louisiana native and the daughter of a politically active judge.
She was hailed for holding the family together when John F. Kennedy Jr. was killed in a plane crash in 1999.
By favoring his wife, Kennedy, 76, is bypassing his late brother Robert Kennedy's eldest son, Joe, a former congressman.

Does this really surprise anybody?
What is this, the House of Lords?
Inherited titles, sigh. Royalty rules.
Nepotism at it’s finest, Kennedy by injection.
“Ted Kennedy: I’d like wife to take seat”
...actually, there’s room for 3 or 4 in Ted’s seat!
She’s going to have to win it. Massachusetts doesn’t appoint replacements to senate seats.
State law requires a special election for the seat no sooner than 145 days and no later than 160 days after a vacancy occurs. The law bans an interim appointee.
Not like it hasn’t happened before. Sonny Bono’s wife replaced him, of course that was through a special election, but she gained the nomination because of the relationship.
“The Senate seat does not belong to the people of the State of Massachusetts. It belongs to them and they can give it to anyone they want.”
True, but look who they “give” votes to in MA...kennedy, kerry, barney frank...
Howie Carr would definitely be a much better choice as a successor, not that it’s really going to happen. People in Massachusetts are also throwing around Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, Rep. Ed Markey, and Rep. Patrick Kennedy of R.I. as possible successors. Whoever is going to succeed Ted Kennedy is going to be a very socialistic individual, so truly conservative R’s and conservatives in general shouldn’t waste their time and effort truly hoping for the best with this seat or with any other major political seat in Massachusetts.
just another example of the “entitlement” mentality - unbelievable. i was feeling so sympathetic until this - once a politician, always a politician, even when your life is threatened.
How about his horse?
Which wife?
this has got to stop
enough already
better her than barney...
Damn, 46 years in the Senate. That about sums up the problem with our political system.
Why just his wife? Why not ensure family succesion by having Splash (the swimmer’s dog) take Jon Cary’s seat as well?
In any case, IF Hussein wins the elections, Jon Cary might well be nominated as Sec. of Defense (he served in Vietnam, you know).
