The Decemberists, the Indie rock band that opened for Barack Obama's Portland, Ore., rally on Sunday that drew an estimated 75,000, often opens its own shows with the National Anthem of the now-defunct Soviet Union, according to Wikipedia.

I like that one too...but I also live in Alabama!
Obama is not running to be president. He is running to be dictator.
Well we’ve got him now!
No better friend, no worse enemy.
The Decemberists are actually a fairly “big” alternative band. They hail from the Pacific Northwest so methinks that a sizable chunk of people in the crowd came to see the FREE concert first, Obama second.
Now a confession: I love the Decemberists. I own their album “Picaresque” and there’s nothing like it in rock music: allusive, eclectic, folksy, and at times, beautiful. On another thread posted today, however, an interview with their guitar player was transcribed. It’s sickening. To call him an America-hater would be kind. So I’m torn. I really do enjoy their music, but I will never again spend one more penny on anything Decemberist.
As I said in the other thread: When will these losers learn to “Shut Up and Sing”?
As someone who used to dabble in New Left politics back in the long lost Sixties,I can tell you that we ALL hated the Soviet Union and we saw them as a perverse neo-Fascist dictatorship who twisted and perverted”real”Socialism.
Now its IS true that lots of deluded folks back then admired Cuba,Mao’s China,North Vietnam, etc but the Soviet Union?
They sucked.
The translation I put on my homepage is: 'No greater friend, no worse enemy.' Don't know the Latin so I'm not sure which is a better translation.
I liked 'The Dixie Chicks'.
Bummer!
Second confession: I like Milli Vanilli too. Hey, just because the two “frontmen” never sang, that doesn’t mean the music itself wasn’t catchy.
I blame it on the rain.
After all, not only will the next president automatically have war-time, Commander in Chief responsibilities, but this post (<-click), while addressing taxes, helps to explain why rookie government "leaders" like Obama are actually in contempt of the Constitution that they have sworn to defend, foolishly following in the footsteps of FDR's dirty federal spending politics.
In fact, the article referenced below shows that Obama is the #1 federal spending proposer in the Senate for '08; Clinton is #2.
Obama, a big-shot federal spenderAnd this post (<-click) exposes how corrupt justices then began using FDR's politically correct license to ignore the 10th A. to unlawfully stifle traditional family values, including the USSC's scandalous legalization of abortion in Roe v. Wade. Note that the post first references two non-abortion cases in order to show Roe v. Wade in a different, troubling perspective.
In fact, consider that the states have the constitutional power (10th A.) to authorize public schools to lead non-mandatory (14th A.) classroom discussions on the pros and cons of evolution, creationism and ID, as examples, regardless that atheists, separatists, pagan-minded judges and the MSM are misleading the people to think that doing such things in public schools is unconstitutional.
The people need to reconnect with the Founder's division of federal and state government powers. The people then need to wise up to the major problems that, since the days of FDR's dirty politics, Congress has not only not been operating within the restraints of the federal Constitution, particularly where constitutionally unauthorized federal spending is concerned, but the USSC has wrongly been ignoring the 10th A. protected power of the states to address religious issues.
The bottom line is that the people need to get in the faces of judges, demanding that judges uphold their oaths to defend the 10th A. protected powers of the states to address religious issues - or get off the bench. The people also need to send big-shot, Constitution-ignoring federal spenders like Obama home as opposed to trying to send people like him to the Oval Office. The people need to get in the faces of members of Congress, demanding a stop to constitutionally unauthorized federal spending while appropriately lowering federal taxes - or get out of DC.
Lincoln put it this way.
"We the People are the rightful master of both congress and the courts - not to overthrow the Constitution, but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." --Abraham Lincoln, Political debates between Lincoln and Douglas, 1858.
For all concerned, I'm speaking in the musical sense only.
I’m sure you’re right. I just went off of memory for the line from McCullogh’s Masters of Rome series (the volume was Fortune’s Favorites, I think). I’ve seen it some other ways too.
It’s cool in any translation.
I just read your homepage; I guess that she had it “greater” too.
It seems my memory is failing me.
Thanks!
BTW, I’m an Alabama voter.
Different circles, different stories.
I have a relative, lifelong Democrat, who I once saw enter an altered state. He was standing, his head tilted back, eyes gleaming as he mentioned “Uncle Joe.” That would be Uncle Joe Stalin. He is from a generation before mine. In the early days of the Reagan Presidency, he told me “There's one thing we know for sure. The Soviet Union will be here long after we are both gone.” He later hoped for the reunification of a smaller Soviet Union (CIS?). I know a liberal Democrat at the office who always blames America first and most always has a kind word for any communist or formerly communist nation. Maybe the New Left was a step or two ahead of many Democrats.
Questions at large. Did FDR refer to Stalin as “Uncle Joe?” Did Eleanor say “Communists are just liberals in a hurry?" I find the corollary to be even more revealing: liberals are just patient communists.

Obama band member from the Decemberists calls Bush a “War Criminal”
And now its changed back again. Dang internet.
The Decembrists (no "e"), or Декабристы, were mutinous army officers in 19th century Russia (in 1825, when Marx was just starting grade school). When I heard about the band I was torn: their name is a literary, but illiterate reference.
Great theme music.
