Some Plano students who are Jewish say they were pressured or taunted to pick up copies of the New Testament from school display tables during recent weeks.
Their parents have called for changes in district policies that allow outside groups to distribute materials on campus.
"Probably the one I heard the most was, 'If the Bible touched you, like, will you burn or something?' " said Jeffrey Lavine, 16, a sophomore at Vines High School. "I sort of played it down as a joke and everything, which it was, but it was definitely a meaner comment than what we're used to."
Plano officials said they pulled aside some students to talk about respect and tolerance after the recent complaints, but no students have been disciplined.
The New Testaments were part of unmanned displays set up by Gideons International, a nondenominational Christian group that has visited a dozen Plano schools in recent months.
District officials said a judge's order prevents them from excluding groups based on their beliefs.
The ruling stems from a 1999 lawsuit in which parents claimed officials stopped them from handing out information that was critical of a district math program, said Superintendent Doug Otto.
"As long as some people have access to the distribution table, all people have access," Dr. Otto said. "That is the policy, and we're trying our best to make people aware of it. We certainly don't want people to think we endorse one religion over another."

Thanks for a good post!
How old are you? Back in the 40’s and 50’s that was probably true.
That wouldn't be a bad policy
Yeah, another one is, “The ceiling will fall on me if I walk into church.” Never saw that happen either.
“This was some 30+ years ago, so perhaps much has changed.”
My guess would be a big affirmative on that. I’ve been to a number of churches throughout life and the reason I’m so pro Israel is I was taught, in Baptist church, Jews were God’s chosen people. Funny that about Columbus. I would not have pictured that.
We used to be a country that was ruled by the majority, but not any more. When ONE complains, prayer is taken out of school. Remember that? We took out prayer and the Christian God and guess who came in? Our old adversary the devil. Now we have school shootings, rapes, cheating like never before, no Christmas message or carols... we’ve come a long way haven’t we? DOWN, that is.
The college I worked in for 28 years was founded to train missionaries and ministers. It’s a far cry from that now.
You can be assured that those those that do such things have never been a student of the Bible, neither the Old or New Testiment. May we never forget the Jews wrote all the Scriptures (Old and New). At the beginning of the Church, all were Jews.
Our Lord Himself said, “Salvation is of the Jews.” (John 4:22) A careful study of we will find the word “Christian” is only given 3 time, “ they were first called Christians,” in Acts 11:26, then in Acts 26:28 Agrippa said,”almost thou persauded me to be a Christian” and last, “if any man suffer as a Christian let him not be ashamed” (1 Peter 4:16). One of the best books I ever read(except the Bible) is Titled “What the Church owes the Jew.”
Arrogance? Preaching Christ is arrogance? Whew.
“I am not disparaging all of MS, but it sure has some weird groups.”
I just don’t get where this is coming from. I was MAJORLY into Star Wars figures as a kid and never heard such a thing. They didn’t like me listening to KISS but this is the first I’ve heard of “The Force” thing. Matter of fact, it was my youth pastor who got me to read “Lord of the Rings” because he thought it was neat how it kind of influenced Star Wars. This from a guy who was one of the “Haloween is Satanic” folks.
I dont think victimhood is the issue.
"Probably the one I heard the most was, 'If the Bible touched you, like, will you burn or something?' " said Jeffrey Lavine, 16, a sophomore at Vines High School. His reaction
"I sort of played it down as a joke and everything, which it was, but it was definitely a meaner comment than what we're used to." <.blockquote>IMO he handled it just fine. And no students are being disciplined, nor is there any indication anyone has called for that.
The issue revolves around the distribution of religious materials to the student body. Access guaranteed for all religious groups. IMO thats a bad idea, it should be limited to student groups and clubs.
You should have gotten a Catholic “Mary Worshiper” as an escort. The Catholic could have thrown Holy Water on them and both of you could delight when they sizzle and hiss.
LOL!
On a more serious note, sorry you had to go through that.
Oh, it’s nothing in the scale of things. Not like we had a cross burned in our front yard.
That said, to this day, the whole family knows when I am pissed at someone because I refer to them as a “Miss Jones.”
To this day, try as I might, I still hate the dried out old bat.
It still wasn’t appropriate and you shouldn’t have had to go through it.
In high school? Don't bet on it.
Romans chapter 8:1-7 has been titled” The Christians Constitution” and I love that title.
“Let every soul be subject to the higher powers. For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained by God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God:and they that resistshall receive to themselves condemnation.”
Please read on through verse 7. Our children should be taught, or at least be made aware of this knowledge. And all should know, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not on thineown understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” (Proverbs4:3-4).
Yes, James Madison also wrote much more, such as, “The belief in a God All Powerful wise and good,is so essential to the moral order of the world and the happiness of man, .......”
If it was your tax money going into prosletyzing your kids into Muslimism, I doubt youd be so sanguine about the whole matter.
Or you could stick the dog and pony show into a back corner of the cafeteria with the ROTC guys. Less annoying; out of sight and mind.
Your kids are being marketed to, and have been for many years. Even the choice of textbooks is a marketing tool to endoctrinate their young minds by the manipulators. If you close the door to some , you open the door to others.
You are fooling your self if do not believe it. Even as parents, we have wrongly endoctinated our children in our own sinful prejudices. You and I have no truths or righteousness except what our righteousnes and holy God has given us as a gift. (11 Corinthians 5:21). Yes it has everything to do with what is given out , or not given out at our schools. “Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17)
