Moderator’s note:This was the first real thread reporting the news today. It was locked for reasons that should be obvious to everyone by now. The Moderator who locked it is the level-headed Mod. I am the arbitrary and capricious Mod. If you choose to martyr yourself I am happy to oblige.

US Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the veteran lawmaker from Massachusetts who is the last surviving brother in the legendary Kennedy family, has been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor, his doctors said today.

Specialists in Boston and around the country said the information released indicated that Kennedy has terminal cancer and might have only a limited time to live.

It doesn’t matter when they’re diagnosed just about certain that the person will die fairly soon. I think WHitey Herzog had the same thing.

So, you are saying that this was melanoma that metastasized into a glioma?

Took care of many, many patients with glioma during my hospital nursing career. It is a devastating diagnosis, particularly for the family. Every one of our patients chose the aggressive radiation treatments--with no survivors after two years. I am not aware of any significant improvements in treatment in the past 20 years.

I would imagine Senator Kennedy's tumor is particularly aggressive, as he would have had many scans when he had his carotid endarterectomy back in October 2007, and the tumor wasn't apparent at that time.

It was first reported he didn’t get up and receive communion at the mass in D.C.

But later I saw freepers discussing the matter and someone posted that he did receive, but sat in his seat and an extraordinary minister came to him and distributed the host to him at his seat.

I’m not sure which story is accurate.

All of us should tremble at the thought. Although I can only speak for myself.

One of my best friend’s wife was diagnosed with a pineoblastoma. They were told it was inoperable, but they found a surgeon that would operate.

She is doing well 8 years after the surgery, although, I thought I read the average life expectancy was 18 months even after successful surgery.

It probably helped that their family is fairly well-off and could go to any surgeon they wanted to.

I’m sure Kennedy will get ONLY the very best. Although, the physical condition he’s in now, along with the lifetime abuse he’s put his body thru... Good Luck Dude! Retire SOON!

Well my best to him. I don't agree with him on any number of things, but it must be said that at very least he has been very consistent in his views.

I know it's easy to make people into Satan and it's a lot of fun, but, he is a human being and has people who love him.

That being said..... Prayers for a recovery and retirement.

I feel the same way. I disagree with him on everything, but I wish him only comfort, health and peace. May he live long.

A personal friend was involved very heavily in the anthrax case involving various senators and congresscritters. During that time, he had handled the letters and subsequently spent some time in the hospital getting checked out and tested. Ted Kennedy did, in fact, take time out from his day to come by the hospital and personally thank my friend for his efforts in the case. The visit was very much appreciated and well received.

Uhhhhh, yeah. And now, back to our regularly scheduled program...
