Two million Britons emigrate in 10 years

Two million British citizens have left the UK in a decade, the greatest exodus from this country in almost a century, new figures will show.

Some historians say the departure of two million Britons in a decade is almost unparalleled in the country's history

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will release figures showing that more than 200,000 Britons emigrated during 2006. That will take the total number who left the country between 1997 and 2006 to 1.97 million.

Another 1.58 million foreign nationals resident in Britain left during the same period.

However, 3.9 million foreigners arrived over the decade, including more than 500,000 in 2006.

The body will publish the raft of immigration figures on Tuesday, as MPs prepare to dismiss the national statisticians’ data as “not fit for purpose” and demand an overhaul of the way population movements are measured.

On Thursday, the Treasury sub-committee of the House of Commons will conclude that the lack of reliable and up-to-date figures for immigrant populations is hampering Government policy both nationally and locally.

ONS figures only go back to 1991, but some historians say the departure of two million Britons in a decade is almost unparalleled in the country’s history.

According to figures compiled by Jay Winter, of Yale University, the last comparable exodus came between 1911 and 1914, when 2.4 million people left Britain. The other significant spike in emigration came in the late 1950s and early 1960s, when thousands of Britons left to start new lives in Australia, Canada and the United States.

The Institute for Public Policy Research, a think-tank, has estimated that there are more than 5.5 million British citizens living abroad.

Jill Rutter, a senior migration researcher at the IPPR, said the recent exodus marked “probably the greatest period of emigration we’ve ever seen”.

She said: “A lot of this is people retiring abroad, which is a relatively new phenomenon and is only possible because we are all better off .

“There is also a much more internationalised labour market and workforce — it is now quite commonplace for people to go abroad to work for a year or more.” Immigrants who come to this country, gain citizenship and then leave also add to the total of British emigrants.

Opposition parties say that some emigrants have been driven out of Britain by its high levels of crime and taxation.

“This explosion in emigration is inevitably a reflection of the state of the country under a Labour government,” said David Davis, the shadow home secretary.

The emigrants are white, and their replacements are otherwises...

Maybe this is why, in Tennessee these days you’re never far from a British accent!

Thousands of women have four abortions

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1976695/Thousands-of-women-had-four-abortions.html

Department of Health figures uncovered by this newspaper show that during 2006 more than 3,800 women underwent at least their fourth abortion, including more than 1,300 who were on their fifth or more. Of more than 60,000 women who underwent a “repeat” abortion, almost 15,000 were on their third.

These included 65 women who had their sixth abortion by the age of 30, and 82 girls aged under 18 who had already experienced three, and more than 50 women who had had eight abortions or more.

...what do you expect? England is a liberal paradise. No one wants to live there - not even the liberals who set it up....

It’s so true. The same thing is happening around the world. South Africa emigration of white south africans. Urban flight. Mass emigration from MA and NY (two states with more people moving out than in). It’s eyes wide shut to reality.

I think some leftists understand it, and simply ‘wish’ it were not so. For example, the leftist expression “race to the bottom” implies that they understand that the states/nations without harmonized laws will compete with each other as each tries to underbid the others in lowering taxes, spending, regulation...so as to make itself more attractive to outside financial interests and unattractive to unwanted entities.

This is precisely why I ENDORSE multiple level stratifications within a “federalist” framework. The result will be downward harmonization - i.e. a reduction of regulation, welfare, taxes, and trade barriers which will lead to voluntary sociopolitical segregation, where parasites, criminals, and other wastes of oxygen will flock to those socialist states which still retain big-government policies.

The push by leftists for a one-world government with harmonized laws, regulations, labor standards, environmental standards, price controls, and so on is precisely to corrupt the forces of economic “natural selection”. Economic globalization was feared by many because it represented additional avenues for this selective process to operate within. The “solution” sought is now political globalization, through bodies like the UN. Put the tax rates at 90% everywhere on earth and there will be no capital flight (there will be no capital growth either, but what kind of concern is that for socialists?).

While I think many on the left are more than a few fries short of a happy meal, it is clear that many do have a solid grasp of the issues. It is just that they have wildly divergent values and goals.

My wife left England to marry me. She has been back visiting for a month and she can’t wait to come back to America. Count her among the 2 million.

2 million emigrants represents about 2.5-3.0% of the average population of Great Britain from 1997-2006.

(1) Ireland isn't Britain. At one time it was controlled by the United Kingdom, but Britain is the island that includes England, Scotland, and Wales. (2) the population of Ireland even today is tiny compared to England, 4.1 million (for Ireland proper aka the republic - the whole island, 5 million) compared to 61 million for the United Kingdom. England is vastly more urbanized than Ireland, today. However, (3) some statisticians think the population of Ireland was considerably larger then. The largest estimate of the pre-famine population of Ireland was 8 million, while England and Wales at the time were 16 million (Scotland not included). That would make this wave somewhat larger, to about the same size. (4) The total Irish population in the world is now more like the same size as the population of GB, estimates run up to 70 million. In the US and the dominions etc. Clouded of course, by that total not being remotely all Irish, but mixed.
