SCIENTIST Tim Flannery has proposed a radical solution to climate change which may change the colour of the sky.
But he says it may be necessary, as the "last barrier to climate collapse."
Professor Flannery says climate change is happening so quickly that mankind may need to pump sulphur into the atmosphere to survive.
Australia's best-known expert on global warming has updated his climate forecast for the world - and it's much worse than he thought just three years ago.
He has called for a radical suite of emergency measures to be put in place.
The gas sulphur could be inserted into the earth's stratosphere to keep out the sun's rays and slow global warming, a process called global dimming.
"It would change the colour of the sky," Prof Flannery told AAP.
"It's the last resort that we have, it's the last barrier to a climate collapse.

Oh, goody. More acid rain!!!

Wow, a new catch phrase! Climate collapse, doesn't that sound ominous! What a bunch of nutcakes liberals are.
I'd like to think so. Unfortunately, with Global Warming true believers, it's hard to be sure that a detail like toxicity would take precedence over the relative effectiveness of one gas over the other.
That didnt work out so well in the Matrix
OK. Just stop demanding that I use ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel, and I’ll do my part...
Doesn’t sulphur cause acid rain?
“Global dimming”.
Well, I know who the biggest dim bulb is.
That is exactly what I was thinking. The guy is a flaming nutball, how do these people get away with such idiocy?
Liberal fanatics act without considering the long term consequences. Remember MTBE? It was supposed to clean the air, but ended up polluting the water. DDT was banned on the basis of bad science...3 million Africans have died of malaria as a consequence. Ethanol was supposed to solve the fuel shortage...it caused food shortages instead. Polar bears were just declared "endangered" in spite of their populations increasing a factor of 5 times over the last 40 years to 25,000. We mustn't let facts get in the way of "important" legislation...even if it is based on a lie.
It's not nice to talk about Algore that way.
Isn't he McCain's new environmental advisor?
Yeah, Its COLD! Feels more like a dam ice age is just around the corner here. Its time for some warming, so I can get some relief from these heating bills.
Or maybe they know it's a hoax - and the fix is a stop-gap to keep the fools believing.
Yellow sky? Gimme a break.
Global warming is unproven, but this guy is absolute proof that ‘Global Dimming’ is a reality.
Uh huh, and you still want to do it?!
He actually is an old bone “scientist” (From the ABC “ Tim is the Principal Research scientist at the Australian Museum in Sydney. He started out, though, doing a degree in English. After graduating, he found a temporary job at the Museum of Victoria in their Vertebrate Paleontology department. This led him to a second degree in Earth Sciences, and from there to a doctorate with the Zoology department at UNSW.”) —not a real climate scientist, but he has written many books.
He likes to attack Bjorn Lomborg, but won't have a debate with him. Luck for us, he has moved to Sydney and accepted a position at Harvard. With any luck he will move to the USA.
Last year he wanted Australia to immediately shut down all of our coal fired electrical plants. He also claimed that the polar bear population has already drastically been reduced due to warming, even though the Canadian told him he was crazy.
The most unfortunate things is that he is the right hand adviser to Mike Rann, Premier of South Australia, for the environment and has the ear of the new Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
The guy has become rich because of this books on climate change which the wackos are buying worldwide.
I know the guy and he is likable, but he is a total flimflam man. I just hope he moves to the USA and leaves us alone.
He thinks man is going to pump more sulfur into the atmosphere than a volcano can and that will change the color of the sky which a volcano hasn’t?
