What's up with the prairie dresses?
MSNBC ^ | Wednesday, April 23, 2008 8:15 AM | By Don Teague, NBC News Correspondent

Posted on 05/18/2008 10:05:55 PM PDT by UCANSEE2

"Three weeks into covering the polygamous ranch raid story, I keep hearing from colleagues throughout NBC News who want to know more about how members of the sect live."

--snip--

"Here are some of the things members of the sect told me about life on the YFZ Ranch – which stands for Yearn For Zion – in Eldorado, Texas:"

--snip--

"Much of the above sharply contrasts with the picture of alleged physical and sexual abuse painted by state investigators. The courts will ultimately decide which version of the truth is closer to reality. I can’t say whether what ranch residents tell me is true or not, but I thought you’d be interested in what they said." Source: http://fieldnotes.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/04/23/935617.aspx

Usually something akin to their perceived origins.

I can see that...still, the hair just bugs me out.

Then tell me just why you say Carolyn is not reliable.....Where is your proof her story is untrue? Matter of fact why don't you take every single name I posted & tell me how they are unreliable too....

“Thus far, the proven lies have been committed by the anti-FLDS crowd, mostly law enforcement. “

I disagree. (you knew that was gonna happen) : )

The FLDS crowd either ‘knew’ the ages of their children, or had a good idea. The fact that they now come out with some proof of age, means they must have already known.

The CPS had to guess, since none of them gave birth to these children, nor raised them from birth. The CPS asked the ages and the FLDS crowd said they didn’t know, or kept changing their stories of the ages of certain children.

ERGO, the CPS might have been mistaken, having been forced to ‘guess’, but the FLDS members had to outright lie, in some of the cases, since they had every reason in the world to ‘know’.

Their ‘reason’ for lying, is another story. Lie, or lose your child, is pretty simple, and most parents would choose the lie.

The FACT they were members of a ‘cult’ (the cult of Warren Jeffs) which was violating the law, and required them to lie to authorities, is something that keeps getting glossed over.

Remember, Carolyn Jessop’s oldest daughter left her mother and went back to the FLDS as soon as she was old enough to make her own decision. Makes you wonder if Ms. Jessop isn’t even nuttier than the FLDS.

All I did was ask if it had been considered that the source might be unreliable. I ALWAYS consider the reliability of my sources before relying on them. Thus far, the proven lies have been committed by the anti-FLDS crowd, mostly law enforcement.

And they are?

What are your reliable sources that corroborate your statement?

/Waits to see if soloton can come up with sources other than the Latter Day Saints church owned Deseret News or the attorneys for the flds.

That’s a huge assumption. Maybe she just liked it. Some of these women obviously do. I certainly wouldn’t, but some of them seem quite content.

In the 1900’s, about 3 percent of the Mormons in Utah practiced polygamy. It was almost always practiced by the men who had sufficient means to support a bunch of women.

Anyway, some of the women liked having “sister wives.” For some of them, it freed them up to pursue careers, while still having children. Some women were sent off to schools. I remember reading about one who went back East medical school, while her “sister wives” cared for her children. In an odd sort of way (and certainly not one I would ever want to emulate) some of the women in polygamous marriages were liberated in ways that other women of the day were not. Utah was, I think, the first state to give women the vote.

On the other hand, there were women ended up feeling sad about the arrangement, and suffered the kind of jealousy and unhappiness that most of us would imagine we would feel in those circumstances.

Makes you wonder if Ms. Jessop isn’t even nuttier than the FLDS.

Why is that? The child was brought up FLDS plain & simple. Its what she knew & what she believes. When she became of age she went back to her faith. I don't find that odd in the least myself. Freedom of choice...The Amish let their children have rumspringa where they go out into the English world to see what it is like. Many return to the church. Maybe the daughter just preferred the FLDS way of life. If I recall she was the one who did not want to leave & said she belonged to the Prophet. Somebody correct me if I am wrong please!

” They imprisoned innocent adults without due process.”

No one has been put in prison, yet. The young lady was in Protective Custody. Here’s the thing. It doesn’t matter what age the GIRL/WOMAN was, she was pregnant. The BABY was in Protective Custody, and without a forced, instant caesarian-section, the mother had to go to.

“In one case the young lady had produced both her birth certificate and drivers license as proof of age. The state of Texas refused to recognize these documents as proof of her age and continued to hold her in illegal captivity.”

(I tried to get the ‘key’ to your long objections listed. Hope the above was it.)

What you say, is essentially true, but you are missing out on some things.

The ‘minors’ were difficult to identify, especially since they would changed their stories, or claimed not to know , and did not have any ID on them during the so called ‘RAID’.

Notice, in the PICTURES OF FLDS WOMEN, not a one of them carries a PURSE.

Now, I could line up a bunch of young ladies, from 12 to 20, and I bet you couldn’t guess a single one of their ages correctly.

So, in some of the cases of minors in custody, since the CPS was forced to guess, there will be some mistakes found.

....

Now, If they produced ‘proof’, you argue, why were they kept in custody.

The ‘answer’ is that this woman was ‘released’ from Protective Custody because the Judge was shown her ‘proof’ in a court of law, and that is the ONLY WAY that someone can be removed from PROTECTIVE CUSTODY.

By the Judge. Each ‘minor’ is getting their chance, in these individual custody hearings, to PROVE their age.

Yes, around 20 may be ‘adults’. Isn’t that at least a good thing? The LAW is being followed, and done in court, and not in the newspaper.

Does this mean that because the CPS had to guess, and was wrong, that there are not minors, who are pregnant, who are in custody properly?

No. How many?

” The state says more than half of the 53 girls ages 14 to 17 are pregnant or already have children. The sect says CPS is incorrectly including in that count 26 females who are actually 18 or older.”

53-26= 27 girls,age 14-17 ,pregnant or have children.

If I had to sweat in those dresses I would. But I believe they wear underwear. It is part of their religion to cover as much skin as possible. Your post made my keyboard need to be cleaned lol. Thanks for my first laugh of the day.

“Why no snide comments about the dresses of the Amish or Memmonite women?”

Because they aren’t the subject of HEADLINE NEWS.

I never said she WAS unreliable. I simply asked if the possibility that she was unreliable had been considered.
