CLEVELAND - The federal government isn't used to being snubbed when it offers to help local governments.
When it offered Chardon Township in Ohio $10,000 in disaster aid for a snowstorm in March, the locals said no thanks.
Township Trustee Chuck Strazinsky told The Plain Dealer for a story published Friday that it was a typical snowstorm unworthy of federal aid. He says the money should be reserved for true emergencies.

I like these guys already. I wish more people had that kind of fiscal restraint.

You know we admire them, but they probably give the Dems the jitters.

This is good.
I'm on the Board of a non-profit that has habitually refused federal, state, county and city funding largely because once they get their hooks into you, you are done.

Township Trustee Chuck Strazinsky is absolutely correct. We are in the heart of the snowbelt here. The snow is nothing we can't handle. The money should be reserved for true emergencies.

Hate to tell you, but I suspect these Trustees will be booted out of office in the next election. Voters are not as principled as politicians.

Chardon, Ohio, is the 5th snowiest city in the US. They can handle a multi-foot snowfall.

I looked at the strange news section of the AP on yahoo for the animal stories and dumb criminals and saw this instead.

You are correct indeed. In March the aluminum buildling where all of our street equipment accidentally burnt down. Destroyed everything, including a brand new truck. We had to borrow snow removal equipment from neighboring townships. Luckily, they were not needed.

I remember in November of ‘96 or ‘97. Band after band of snow came off Lake Erie for three days straight. We ended up with 80” of snow.

Suggest you keep a sharp eye out for Black Helicopters and large 18-wheelers with no "logo". The boys in D.C. don't like self-sufficient people./s (maybe)

I moved last October from Chardon Twp to Aiken SC to get away from the snow..... I lived there for 20 years and they do have brutal winters. But most people in Chardon have 4 wheel drive cars and have coped with many blizzards....Kudos to this trustee for turning down aid......I think , however, that the money will be put to some other nonsense.

Bravo for Chardon - and they’re right! Chardon’s in the snow belt - a foot or two of snow is normal there.
