Schwarzenegger calls for 'rebranding' GOP
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 17, 2008 | Carla Marinucci

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger created shock and awe in the Republican Party when he warned years ago that the GOP was in danger of "dying at the box office" by failing to make the sale to a wide swath of voters. And with the presidential election looming, the Republican governor of the nation's most populous state - a decidedly blue state - has now found a chorus of agreement. The Republican "brand" - thanks to an unpopular president, a war, gas prices, foreclosures and deficit - has become such damaged goods that GOP Rep. Tom Davis of Virginia groused last week that "if we were dog food, they would take us off the shelf." The answer for GOP presidential candidate John McCain: take a page out of the Schwarzenegger playbook and sell a product that is "counter" to the current GOP brand on issues like global warming, spending, and even immigration reform.

I think that the Supreme Court may have given the McCain campaign some unintentional aid, if you know what I’m getting at.

I would actually vote for a Republican IF they could manage to uphold the Constitution, and have enough courage to simply do what was right. Unfortunately, finding these sorts is difficult.

You bring up a good point though. I'm baffled by those who will vote for candidates simply because they have an (R) following their name. It's as if they're "stuck" in some sort of mental blockage. I don't get it. Maybe I'm not supposed to "get it". ...and so we continue in the downward spiral. ;-)

I totally agree.

I wonder where are some of the Freepers who were and have been so pro-Arnold — like BiblicalChristian. I hope they and others will now admit THE OBVIOUS. THEY made a tremendous mistake. Arnold is a TURKEY, with a capital T.

This reminds me of when AMF bought Harley Davidson back in the 1970s. Remember that? Remember what "AMF" stood for? "Adios MF!" :-) It's rather the same with the GOP. AMF to them too!

I wasn't aware of that acquisition. I did know that H-D positioned itself as providing basic transportation. Later on they recovered after realizing that Harley riders are straddling that hog in order to sit at a stoplight and turn the right grip to make the vroom vroom sound.

Schwarzenegger is the Governor equivalent of Mayor Bloomberg.

What the GOP needs to do is get back to some bedrock, Conservative Principles and quit trying to be “Dem Lite” and stand for something the American people can believe in.

Where is Ronnie Reagan when you need him.

This is so insane/absurd/disgusting it could only come from pol. The GOP HAS been thoroughly rebranded and its a horrific disaster. Now they call for more of the same.

Personally I wish we could flush the GOP and get a new truly conservative party. Some things are beyond fixing. McQueeg certainly can only worsen the situation.

Yes!the GOP does need re-branding.It also needs to remove clown like Schwarzneggar from the party.

The Republican party will never amount to much until these RINO’s are removed.

The one where they imposed gay marriage on an unwilling public. There is already a move to get a Constitutional amendment on the state ballot to overturn the Court’s ruling.

Yup, Bush has done the party in. If you review his campaign talk you will see the opposite of what we got.

I was thinking, if we recall the 4 activist assclowns (a la Rose Bird), Ah-nold will only appoint 4 even more liberal ones in their place. When Bird was recalled, we had Gov. Deukmejian to appoint actual jurists to the bench.

Thing is, the three ousted judges weren’t recalled. In 1986, they were on the general election ballot, with voters given a “yes” or “no” choice on whether to retain them. After they were rejected, Deukmejian appointed the successors.

This year, only one of the judges (Ming Chin) is on the ballot, and he opposed the majority’s ruling.

It occurs to me that we need to retire the moniker”RINO” as it is now meaningless. CINO still works but not RINO as the GOP is now Arnold’s, McQueeg’s, GWB’s etc party.

This is a moment to remember. The GOP is disenfranchising conservatives. It’s becoming more obvious by the day. The GOP is kicking to the curb those who brought them extraordinary success since 1980. It’s over. They have clearly decided to attempt to out lib the liberals. They are adopting precisely the wrong formula. Why have two parties if the GOP insists on mimicking the Dems?

Make no mistake about it. This is Bush’s fault. He is radioactive. But, he has become the face of conservatism to millions of Americans. This White House and the GOP Congress have effectively destroyed the conservative movement. For years. Decades. This movement I have fought for. Sweat blood and tears for. Is being kicked to the curb by the likes of Schwarzenegger, Bloomberg, Michael Gerson, David Brooks and John McCain.

We are out in the cold. Let me tell you something. The GOP convention in the Twin Cities is going to be more raucous than the Dems in Denver. By a country mile. There will be a fracturing of the party so deep it will take years to repair. Conservative activists may walk out. I look for a “McCain Mutiny.” The party platform will be a battle zone.

I truly believe this is the end of the GOP as we have known it since 1980. I have no party. I hope McCain wins. But, I will not vote for him. Can’t do it. I will vote my Sen. Cornyn. Congressman Burgess. Down ticket Texas conservatives. Nationally I have zero faith in any of em.

....there's just no fight in the Republican party...no leadership...no spines. After all the lies, racial slurs, discoveries and overall exposure of weak democratic candidates...Hilda's REAL numbers..so many rats wouldn't vote for her...BHO's past, and as of now, his yet to be discovered associations.... Sorta makes Allen's "macaca" moment really stupid don't it?
