Sen. Kennedy falls ill; taken to Boston hospital by helicopter

HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.

Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.

A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.

He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.

Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.

I was wondering how you all were handling this when I heard it on the radio. I was proud of FR on the day Bill Clinton was rushed to the ER.

It was hard to do and I stammered like Brooke White but I did pray for Senator Kennedy for a full and speedy return to health.

I’m sorry about your mother. When my mom was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, she was absolutely fine until 3 months in when her body started shutting down, starting with multiple strokes. Although she was alert, she was back in her childhood - she got upset when my siblings and I told her we were her children. “I have no kids!” she replied. Of course not - she was back in her youth. I miss my mom a lot.

The timing of this is interesting, considering he has thrown his support to BHO. Seems mighty convenient for certain parties that this happens before the Dem Convention.

Not that I'm suggesting any conspiracy theories or anything... (lol)...

Sometimes, you pray when you don’t feel it. The Bible says to pray for ALL leaders and those who are in authority. If God could change the Apostle Paul, He could change Kennedy. In other words, we don’t always have to “feel” what we are praying in order to be obedient in prayer.

I agree. I do think it will benefit Obama if Kennedy dies...probably even if he recovers. This will be one hell of a advertisement free of charge for Obama. One last kick in the butt to Hillary from Ted.

Lots of comparisons to JFK, the other Kennedys who have endorsed him, and on and on and on. I don’t think you will find many news reports on TV about his death that won’t mention Obama while discussing this.

He’s doing OK. Thanks. I don’t think those things ever leave a person the “same”. But I thank the Lord I still have him.

My condolences. It’s a horrible experience for everyone.

Well, if the reports about a stroke are true, Ted Kennedy will not be able to campaign for Obama. If he dies (I hope he recovers & retires in health) there will be a bit of the sympathy factor for Obama. But I don’t think it will make up for the energy (& money) that Kennedy would have brought to the Obama campaign.

Senator Kennedy loves his country expressed in views and policies that we do not agree with. I wish him good health and that he recovers and I thank most of the posters here for their kind words and condemn the classless ones.

Lord God,

Hold the Senator close to you and may Your hand of healing rest upon him. May his heart be at peace and may You grant him blessings in the midst of this trial. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Fox News just referred to his “accomplishments” like working on a national minimum wage.

Give me a break.
