Sen. Kennedy falls ill; taken to Boston hospital by helicopter

HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.

Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.

A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.

He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.

Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.

I hope and pray that he survives this. I am FAR on the opposite end politically from Ted Kennedy but this isn’t about politics. May he regain his health and take up fishing as an occupation.

Really not sure what your standard is but I hope you are around when Castro is on his sick bed and people on this site are dancing around it.

Last warning - keep it up and the thread is locked. I don't have time for your guff.

Last warning. If you keep this up, the thread will be locked.

Why punish everyone for the actions of one?

Just ban her, even if temporarily.

You can express them later. Not now.

A life threatening condition affecting one of the most powerful senators in Washington isn’t boring either. We don’t have to act like the DU. We CAN control ourselves.

I understand the desire to keep it all respectful and decent - but it makes for a boring thread, especially since it's about osmeone we have common feelings about - but cannot express them. Might as well not even have this thread then...

There are other times and places for all that.

Be aware that the googlebot is constantly scanning anything that is posted on FR, and once it gets into their cache, there is nothing that any moderator can do about it. It will live forever. It takes only minutes for anything posted on FR to be findable via Google search. If the mods can catch posts that reflect badly on FR and the conservative movement, that’s great. If not, well, you can guess where those “Free Republic is a hate site” accusations come from. We are better than DU, I would hope.

Never fear. I read them all. Then I put them in a file and categorize and edit them for spelling and intent.

New information.

Doctors believe that Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts suffered a seizure at his home in Hyannis Port this morning, then a second seizure as he was being transported by helicopter from Cape Cod Hospital to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, according to an official briefed on the situation.

His condition was unclear early this afternoon, as a special police security detail gathered at Mass. General. Kennedy family members were called this morning and told to rush to Boston, according to sources.

The Hyannis Fire Department responded to an emergency call at the storied Kennedy compound at 8:30 this morning, according to the Cape Cod Times. The senator was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital, then flown to Boston. The newspaper published a photograh of Kennedy, strapped to a gurney, being carried to the chopper.

Kennedy, 76, is the senior statesman in one of America’s political dynasties. He was first elected in 1962.

Yeah, just suspend the person who’s acting out. Please don’t punish all of us for the action of one.

Get off the backs of the moderators. Looks like you jump to cause problems in these circumstances.

Do you not want a respected website? Do you like being embarrassed about the trash on a website you post on?

And of course this always leads to comments about Jim and the running of the website.

Give us a break. No posts are worthy of an outrage should they be pulled by accident or otherwise. Get over it.
