HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.
Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.
Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.
The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.
Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.
A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.
Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.
He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.
Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.
Mod Note: We're watching this thread and are more than happy to hand out suspensions
Due to his size I believe he probably suffered from sleep apnea, he would have to I think.
Perhaps if he is unconscious for any reason he needs assistance to breath, he can’t “wake up” three time a minute to take a breath.
My brother is large, he worries about that all the time. If he as been put under at all he might need positive airway pressure to keep his throat from collapsing.
Prayers for the Kennedy family.
I will pray for his soul and, God willing, for his recovery, but I really can't think of a single contribution that this man has made to the world that is worthy of praise.
I think it’s vital for us to think of the good that he has done our Republic in his public life. I can think of one thing. He voted against the Kyoto Protocol when the Senate passed a Sense of the Senate Resolution. It passed 95-0. Kennedy was, surprisingly, in the 95. Kerry was, predictably, in the 0 column. Thanks, Teddy.
I invite all other participants to post anything else that is positive (in his public life).
Would have been better if you had just stopped here:
"Wow, speechless...I dont like the mans politics"
The man (Mr. Kennedy) sure wished and willed a ton of bad things on our great country. If he recovers, I hope he has a political change of heart.
I do not mean to be moribund, but you know that expression about things in threes. May they all exercise, get plenty of rest, eat well, and take vitamins, but their are are rather large number of elderly Democratic Senators.
Sending prayers to the Senator and the Senator’s family.
Cape Cod Hospital is a modern 238 bed hospital with neurosurgeons. It is fully capable of treating stroke victims.
That they transferred him to Massachusetts General indicates that it’s probably a massive stroke, requiring brain surgery. Just my speculation.
Consider the possibility that the media have been told to expect a negative outcome, but only on deep background.
I take that as an ominous sign for Senator Kennedy. Drudge is well aware of what's going on. Probably more aware than the rest of us.
Expect a big headline to break any moment now.
I am a MA resident and NOT a fan of the kennedy’s, however, I have been monitoring the local radio stations for about an hour and there is no new news at all, just a repeat of what we already know.
I have thought this on many occasions. They are truly cursed. God's will be done.
Theres a reason the socialists continue to gain ground in America. IMO crickets have something to do with it. The baby boomers have left a huge mess behind.
Prayers for his salvation.
I do not like the man, but, he is a fellow human being.
Prayers for his recovery and prayers for his family.
Father, hear our prayers.
I agree
(( and I’m very glad to have had a nice word & handshake with You at a get-to-gether ))
I know you’re busy, but Please see post #192
thats a nice way to put it
Same here. I hope and pray the big guy pulls through.
