Sen. Kennedy falls ill; taken to Boston hospital by helicopter

HYANNIS -- U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy was rushed by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital this morning after falling ill at the Kennedy compound in Hyannisport.

Hyannis fire responded to the compound after a call was made around 8:30 a.m. It's unclear what Kennedy's medical condition is, but after he spent almost two hours in the emergency room a decision was made to transfer him to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Kennedy, 76, was placed on a stretcher and wheeled out to the MedFlight helicopter around 10:15 a.m. where it took off from Barnstable Municipal Airport.

The Kennedy family is preparing to host the annual Best Buddies Challenge event in Hyannisport this afternoon, which is a fund-raiser for the organization. Best Buddies was founded by Anthony Kennedy Shriver and helps people with intellectual disabilities.

Hundreds are expected to participate in the event, which kicked off this morning with a 100-mile bicycle ride from the Kennedy Library in Boston to Hyannisport.

A concert at the Kennedy compound is scheduled for tonight.

Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate for forty-three years.

He was elected in 1962 to finish the final two years of the Senate term of his brother, Senator John F. Kennedy, who was elected president in 1960.

Since then, Kennedy has been re-elected to seven full terms, and is now the second most senior member of the Senate.

Thanks for posting this, been watching it on TV and looking for any updates.

I am no Ted Kennedy fan, but I’ll pray for him and his family.

Let’s hope all freepers show dignity and refrain from nasty or hateful comments.

Let's be clear though:
In October, Kennedy had surgery to repair a nearly complete blockage in a major neck artery. The discovery was made during a routine examination of a decades-old back injury.

The hourlong procedure on his left carotid artery — a main supplier of blood to the face and brain — was performed at Massachusetts General. This type of operation is performed on more than 180,000 people a year to prevent a stroke.

The doctor who operated on Kennedy said at the time that surgery is reserved for those with more than 70 percent blockage, and Kennedy had "a very high-grade blockage."

ALL I said was God determines the outcome for Ted Kennedy...
..but I didn't wish his death...

..also, though, I couldn't continue to listen to Wallace, etc, praise him for years of liberal policy.

WHY WAS THIS NOT ACCEPTABLE, Sir.?

Thanks for the note.

Several years ago in Washington, D.C., I was at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and K Street heading to work one November morning. An SUV with Massachusetts tags pulled over and Ted Kennedy got out.

I've freeped Kennedy many times over the years. But this day was November 22nd, the anniversary of the assassination of his brother, John. I silently watched Kennedy walk over to a flower stand on the corner and buy a bouquet. He went unnoticed by those rushing to work that day.

After he paid for the flowers and returned to his vehicle, I walked over to the vendor and asked if he knew who his customer was. He did not. I informed him about Sen. Kennedy and told him that his flowers were most likely going to be placed at his brother's grave at Arlington National Cemetery.

There is a time and place for everything. That was not the time to freep him.

Ok, I can’t stand it. I simply must say something.

I will NEVER say anything nice about a Kennedy or any other lib, especially Ted Kennedy.

However, I pray that he survives this with enough health to allow him to quietly retire and still have enough left to enjoy his boat....a love we both share.

I can tell you that if he’s awake, and if he’s had a stroke, that he is confused and frightened. A year ago, I survived a stroke during heart surgery...it was quite an experience. Fortunately for me, I recovered from most of it, so far.

Every family has it’s share of grief and tragedy. Why is the Kennedy family thought to be so unique in this regard?? Because theirs is public? They are no different than anyone else. Prayers for Senator Kennedy.

Local news just said the family has been summoned.

That doesn't sound good. Conflicts with the report on CNN about a statement from Kennedy's office saying he was "not feeling well" and was air-lifted to MA General "for evaluation". It also conflicts with the photograph that medically experienced FReepers pointed out that he was being respirated while on the gurny being loaded on the helicopter.
