Horowitz Haters Keep Parading Selective Moral Outrage

On Monday night David Horowitz spoke to a packed house at Embarcadero Hall. It would be a bit of an understatement to say the event got fiery. No doubt, many people came out of the event feeling offended and angry. As the president of the club that hosted the event, there are a few points that I would like to make.

It is the obligation of members of a religion to strongly denounce those factions of their faith who do horrible things in the name of said faith. I would expect the moderate Muslims on our campus and the world to do just this.

I consider Poli Sci to be one of the great oxymorons of our time. However, the occasional thoughtful PS major does manage to break through. Why not start one good lib arts school for the few (very few) lib arts students possessing the ability to think, and close all the rest of the lib arts schools. Think of the savings. Nothing to loose (except the constant teaching of outmoded economic and social issues). Much to gain - we’ll keep tuitions way down, since the majority of students in our universities are pursuing these marshmallow degrees. (Full apologies to those many very sharp students pursuing PS and other lib arts degrees. You are need, but as of now, you are greatly outnumbered by the future McDonalds assistants.)

The heated “debate” seems to stem from Horowitz’s comments on one of the attendees “terrorist garb”...no doubt the Arafat-type scarf... called a “cultural symbol” by others.

David Horowitz has answered that question thoroughly and convincingly in his Unholy Alliance. Where I felt bewildered and confused, I now feel crystal clear. Unholy Alliance is such a great book.

It begins with the leftist movements at the beginning of the 20th Century, and works its way up to the present day, exploring the anti-American attitude of these movements in detail. Horowitz shows that the enemies of the US back then are largely the same group today, operating under the same misperceptions, making the same mistakes, and pursuing the same impossible utopia.

Individual chapters are included on the Patriot Act (I was persuaded that it is a GOOD thing); the democratic flip-flop on Iraq once G.W. Bush implemented what they agreed with Clinton needed to be done; the driving components of the current anti-war movement; as well as chapters on individual personalities who are major spokespeople of the Left. Horowitz covers a lot of ground, and he covers it concisely and clearly. Unholy Alliance is richly informative without ever being boring or plodding.

This book is so illuminating that I simply cannot do justice to it here. I love people who reason so clearly that they help me get my own reasoning clear. Horowitz is just that type of person! In the terrain of mindless clichés (no-blood-for-oil, etc.), he is a breath of real fresh air."

This problem will be solved when the moderate Muslims stand up and declare with one voice the radicalism that has infected parts of their peaceful religion do not represent them. Muslims can solve this problem in the long run by condemning all terrorism including Hamas and Hezbollah.

Smart bombs and the resulting minimized collateral damage of Western 'smart' bombs prevents muslims from speaking out against the terrorist that infest their religion. They have little fear of being killed or harmed by attacks from the Western world. Conversely, they know they will be targeted and destroyed if they speak out against the terrorists in their midst. Their silence is merely a way to stay alive. If they feared being killed when the evil elements next door were targeted, they may be more likely to expose them and join the fight against them. Collateral damage has a profound effect and when it is limited or eliminated a motivational factor has been lost.

Apparently, getting Muslim Students to denounce Hizbollah and Hamas is next to impossible and “too complicated”.

“However, UCSB MSA President Faheem Ahmad said the request was unfair.

“That is not my responsibility to denounce anyone,” Faheem said. “I don’t see you condemning Ann Coulter for saying that Jews have to be perfected.””

(Of course, you don’t see Ann lobbing rockets at innocent Jews to try and “perfect” them!)

Excellent point, now the problem is how to resolve it. It appears we are turning the tide in Iraq by showing the local leaders that they benefit by supporting the good guys and throwing the foreign jihadists out.

It becomes far more difficult to do this in such places as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. We (Tolerant West) have no feet-on-ground there and they swim in the jihadist rhetoric from mosques and madrasses. We are going to be facing this fight for at least the next generation as the oil wealth gives jihad a most powerful lever.
