LOS ANGELES, (AP) -- The community solidarity that followed the killing of high school football star Jamiel Shaw Jr. did not last.
A prosecutor has been pulled from the case after clashing with Shaw's parents, who are demanding hate-crime charges against the suspect, believed to belong to a violent Hispanic gang. And the family is fighting suggestions that an affinity for a rival gang was what led to Shaw's slaying March 2.
At the heart of the friction is the polarizing issue of race in a city known for its diversity of cultures. Shaw, 17, was black; prosecutors say the man charged with killing him, Pedro Espinoza, is in the country illegally.
Shaw's family is fighting for passage of "Jamiel's Law," which would overturn a long-standing rule preventing Los Angeles police from inquiring about suspects' immigration status. It has not been welcomed in all corners; opponents say it could deter illegal immigrants from reporting crimes.
The rift between the Shaws and the district attorney's office was exposed last week when Jamiel Shaw Sr., 47, and his ex-wife Anita Shaw, 43, met with District Attorney Steve Cooley to complain about Michele Hanisee, the prosecutor on the case.
Jamiel Shaw said Hanisee pressured him to stop pushing for the law and threatened to depict their son as a gang member unless they dropped demands that she prosecute the case as a hate crime.
"Basically, she came across as being pro-immigration," Shaw said Tuesday. "She was definitely putting pressure on the family."

Just last week 600 people were involved in a massive fight at a L.A. high school.
It may not have started as a racial event but it broke down that way.
L.A. may well look like Beruit Lebanon before its over, a once beautiful city ruined by civil war.
If the victim was white they would have charged the victim with a hate crime for making the La Raza dudes jump off the bed more than once.

I listened to this unfold on Los Angeles station KFI last Friday. Nice to see AP is on top of the story.
Looks to me like the Los Angeles power structure is pulling on every lever in an effort to get this labeled as something other than a ‘hate crime’, which would expose that Hispanic gangs are deliberately targeting innocent Blacks. The last thing the local politicians want to do is have to answer questions about what they’re going to do about that.
I heard John and Ken (KFI talk show) recently talk to the father about this tragedy. The father was saying that they want to use the backpack his son was wearing as one of the ways to identify this young man as a gang member. And the kids MySpace. He apparently was making a “peace sign” which they are going to try to use as a gang sign.
Disgusting.
Why is it OK for Americans to be murdered on our own streets by illegals? Why is that OK?
It will deter illegals from reporting crimes? That’s the stupidest comment I’ve heard in a long time. What are they expecting? The illegals to confess to all the crimes they’ve committed and continue to commit? Because confessions are the only way they’ll get any reports of crimes.

Because our leadership, from local to state to national, are cowards, and don’t want to offend the two main groups who passionately hate us and want us dead and gone: muzzies and illegals from Mexico and Central America.
The LAPD is under a “Federal Edict” because of past problems. Maybe they have been labeling Hispanic - on - black crimes as gang crimes instead of hate crimes, because of they have a lot of hate crimes the Feds will completely take over?
Horse crap. Los Angeles has less crime per capita than almost every major city in other states. In many case, *much* less.

I don’t live in LA, but in Orange County. LA is a Special Order Forty city where the cops can see an illegal they have arrested before, and can’t throw them out of the country UNTIL they do another crime. Can’t touch those illegals even when the cops know that they are illegal.
The young hispanic who killed the young black, had just gotten out of jail where NO ONE did a status check to find out if he was illegal. If they had, he would not have been on the streets, killing Americans. He was only out for 28 hours, if I remember right.
No. I don’t know about any “Federal Edict”. But I do know that there have always been problems between blacks and hispanics. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Black and Hispanic gangs, were trouble way back in the ‘60’s. The liberal powers demand that we all believe the fiction that only whites are racists. People of color can NEVER be racist. So, a Hispanic killing a black is not racist because the liberals have defined it so.
They don’t want to change their dictionary. They can never be wrong, you see.
