Scientists probe recent coyote attacks in California
AP Science ^ | May 13, 2008 | ALICIA CHANG

"Their aggressive behavior seems to be on the upswing," said Steve Martarano, a spokesman with the state Department of Fish and Game. "They just seem to lose their fear of humans."

Since the 1970s, more than 100 coyote attacks on humans in Southern California have been recorded, with half the incidents involving children age 10 and younger.

"If they see a young child and they have a chance, yeah they'll take it," said Kevin Brennan, a state wildlife biologist.

Game wardens don't normally hunt coyotes unless they pose a threat to people. After attacks, they trap and then shoot coyotes. They also carry shotguns or small-caliber rifles, but won't fire on the animals unless they get a clear shot.

Authorities dissuade people from hunting renegade coyotes themselves and suggest that they instead make noise or throw objects to scare them from neighborhoods.

coyotes in recent weeks with reports of the wild animals sleeping in yards and pestering residents.

"They're so brazen right now," she said. "They just stand there and look at you."

Earlier, a coyote attacked a 2-year-old girl playing in a city park in Chino Hills...

The next day, a coyote in the same place made a beeline for another child,

Since last year, there have been seven coyote attacks in the Chino Hills area, including four in which children were bitten.

"Coyotes are opportunistic," Timm said. "They go where the food is."

Coyote snack food.

Rule of Western Suburban Life #2554: The more expensive the toy breed, the more delicious it is to the coyote.

They seem to boundary the area by roads in section: ‘474. Hours for Taking.’

Dinsdale states:
Discharging a firearm in an urban environment is an issue (as it should be).

I agree with that. But how far away should a shooter be from the city for a weapon to be reasonably safe?

Then what would you suggest we do about coyotes that get close enough we can all agree that it wouldn’t be safe to hunt?

"even within the LA City limits where you can legally hunt coyotes."

Fine but that is in the Los Angeles nation forest area. Which is probably not the area that most of the attacks are taking place.

There are a few wide open areas very close to the boarders of LA which you can travel many miles back without seeing a structure of any type that coyotes are very common to see.

474 Hours for Taking bans night hunting of varmints between those roads. It doesn't ban it outright.

What to do about a neighborhood coyote? Traps seem like the best option.

I used to live in LA County and I had a hunting license. Moved out about 3 years ago. Hunting coyotes was perfectly legal, including in LA County. It still is in vast areas there, e.g. in the Angeles National Forest, the Los Padres NF, and on private land in unincorporated areas. It is, however, illegal to discharge a firearm within a city boundary as well as within a certain distance of a residence. Also, many state and city parks prohibit the posession of archery equipment. Unfortunately, that’s where most nuissance songdogs live.

You tell me I have no creativity and then you post this? Please!

I don’t drink alcohol and it has been years since I had anything but a regular coffee.

Some of you posters from California are overly defensive. Lighten up, will you? We’re mostly Americans here.

Scientists probe recent coyote attacks in California

LOL!! What a steaming load. Scientists?
My 5 year old just passed Kindergarden and he could tell them as clear as a bell that wolves, bears, coyotes, alligators, and other dangerous animals that are free to hunt and kill humans are going to kill you and eat you if you let them run rampant.

.

In the past...

...the Inland Valley Humane Society that governs Coyote Control policy for Chino Hills, and all of San Bernardino County, have refused to act on the many made calls made by residents about Coyotes walking alongside their open air wrought iron back yard fences where loving pets play.

Only the recent TV publicity about these same Coyotes going after children has bought proper much needed action.

NUTS.

“Actually it is spelled California, and it has always been legal to shoot coyotes - with lead. Perhaps you should learn facts about the things you post on, otherwise more people than just me will assume you are an ignoramus.”

You live in cali?

And you call him an ignoramus?

BTW..it’s now known as COLLEE-FOUR-NYAH east of the rockies...

“But, nevertheless, these suburbanized coyotes have to be exterminated as they have lost their fear of man and have learned that it is easy hunting in man’s backyard...”

We are having a coyote problem in the middle of the city limits here in Texas. I have been around and around with the Animal Control people to no avail. They refuse to do anything. When I contacted the feds(US wildlife officials at the state level) they were perfectly willing to come trap the animals in humane leg traps and put them down, but the ‘city officials’ have to ‘request’ their assistance and they refuse to. The animal control dude told me that it was illegal to set leg traps in Texas and that they will not kill the coyotes that they trap.

I am going to buy a paint gun today and this weekend I plan to sit on my roof and ‘paint’ a few in an effort to scare them off. They have already killed a number of pets in my neighborhood and the only thing the city officials are willing to do is tell us it is all ‘our fault’ for having pets and bird feeders!!

Go figure....(eye roll)

Ever wonder why so many people live here? Ever wonder why more conservatives live here than in any other state? And you are calling me ignorant?

California is by far the most wonderful and prosperous state in the nation. We’ll get rid of the leftists and take over again. It goes in cycles. Not because everyone is liberal, but because most people are too busy enjoying life here to pay attention. Its too bad but that’s the way people are.

We are happier, more prosperous and live very comfortable lives. Glad I’m not you. But you are smug and happy in your ignorance of what you are missing so go back to what you were doing. Your shift manager is looking for you. The hamburgers are burning and the fry cooker is empty.

He is the only one I have seen on my land. Don't have a problem with wood rats, just a few field mice that the hawks and snakes do a good job of controlling. I have 2 young kids and will be adding some some livestock (including chickens) once I retire from the Corps in Sept.
I will have a dog then and may put a mule out in the pasture where I saw the coyote. Hopefully those natural deterrents will keep him (them) away. If his stomach still overrides his brains though.....

You won’t see very many packrats if there’s coyotes in the area. They don’t permit them to get very popular. LOL

So anyway I’d leave him alone. The chickens will attract fox, coyotes and red hawks. If you have a good pen for the coop and a decent sized dog, you should be ok.

First of all... “j/k” means JUST KIDDING...

Secondly

You can spare me the “You dont live here “ crap.....I lived in the Bay area for 6 years...Half moon bay, San metao,Burlingame and El-granada...

I even know where the almost secret one lane tunnel is to the old Gun emplacments on the north side of the Golden gate ...you know...the place where most photos of San fran city scape including the golden gate are taken from...

You know what happens when you assume...

You should have asked if I had ever lived in cali, before you accused me of knowing nothing about cali, becuause I never lived there...

Ignoramus (not kidding this time)
