McCain calls for greenhouse-gas cuts, criticizes Bush administration

WASHINGTON – Sen. John McCain called Monday for reductions in carbon emissions and criticized the Bush administration for failing to lead the fight against climate change.

"We have many advantages in the fight against global warming, but time is not one of them. … We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," the Arizona Republican said in a speech delivered at a wind-energy facility in Portland, Ore. "The most relevant question is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."

McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, proposed a "cap-and-trade" system to reduce greenhouse gases and allow the sale of rights to excess emissions by firms that reduce their own emissions. ...

Such a system would "change the dynamic of our energy economy" by giving companies incentives to invest in alternative energy sources such as wind, solar, nuclear, clean coal, biomass and biofuels, McCain said, providing the United States with an energy supply "that is safe, secure, diverse and domestic."

--snip--

McCain's proposal falls short of those of Democratic contenders Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. They both called for reducing emissions by 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050, in line with what's recommended by most scientists, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

"To his credit, Senator McCain wants to do something serious about global warming, but his proposal falls far short of what the science says we need to do today," said Gene Karpinski, president of the nonpartisan League of Conservation Voters. McCain's lifetime score from the League of Conservation Voters is 24 percent. That compares with 87 percent for Clinton and 86 percent for Obama.

It’s depressing all right. It makes me very bitter.

I think I’m going to have to go home tonight and cling to my guns until it’s time to go to church.

Bob Barr and the Libertarians are looking better every day. Barr could be McCain's “Perot Factor” if he goes too far to the left. I think he is so over confident that he is willing to push these liberal ideas right into our faces. This guy is unreal.

I vote for pandering.

And THAT is far woorse than being ignorant. Ignorant can be cured by education. Pander Bears end up having to be put down like rabid dogs.

McCain, our nominee. Like the line in “Hillary’s Downfall” (You Tube, funny as hell): “The voters have stolen my nomination”, and the GOP nominee.

The biggest ‘proven’ cause of Greenhouse gas emition by humans is there habit of eating meat. Have either fatman Gore or “Where’s my glasses??” McCain proclaimed that they will be giving up meat for the good of the planet? Of course not. Heaven help them if they have to really sacrifice for their fairy-tale cause.

Rush is lamenting having a Liberal Democrat as the GoP nominee after responding to McCain and his environmental propensities and speech.

Folks, this guy is so Third Way, ie:, it hurts, he and many others today are seeking to blend corporate and gubamint together and running a Third Way movement to screw the globe up even more and make a lot of dough doing it..

In other words, he is a Progre$$ive , a liberal, a TWirP. The GoP is full of them these days.

McCain is a total POS. One of the things Bush did right is to reject this silly fraud.

I've said it before and I will say it again now. McCain is 1.)either so stupid he actually thinks the conservative base will vote for him no matter what he says and does or, 2.)He is actually trying to lost this election because he is bitter about 2000.

Either way he is a total idiot.

Is there any way we can possibly clone another Ronald Reagan between now and the election?

I hope he's pandering, because if he's serious we all better consider moving out of the country.

McCains speech was a joke. After hearing it, I could swear he makes George W Bush sound like a great orator.

With each passing day McCain looks more and more like a big loser.

As long as it doesn’t seriously damage our economy, who cares? the less oil we use for energy the better. That stuff is more valuable as chemical feedstock anyhow. Build a hundred nuke plants I say.

I agree with the nuke part, but the nukes will not materialize in necessary capacity, not until blackouts happen despite thousands of windmills and PV cells. By then it will be 10 years too late.

I disagree about "who cares". It will hurt the economy. Cap and Trade will limit our ability to find and use our own fossil fuels (oil, coal, and NG included). There is nothing like entering an economic fight against third world and communist countries with both hands tied behind your back while they are not similarly restrained.

"I’m supposed to hold my nose and vote for this moron? I was leaning that way but no more..."

I briefly thought the same (hold my nose) after everyone else dropped out. Everyday brings more reasons to not vote for him.

I don't like using the "never" word, but I am very close to making a conclusion on whether or not I will vote for a President in this election.

My Texas Congressional candidates absolutely deserve my support however, but I think I will be a GOP maverick for the next 4 years in honor of John McCain.

He is not the better candidate. None of them are.

So right. If McCain is elected, the Republicans left in Congress will go along with his agenda (which is a lo-cal version of the democrat agenda).

We're screwed. Maybe it's better if McCain loses so Republicans can so back to behaving like conservatives.
