Senate rejects GOP oil drilling plan (GOP measure, defeated Tuesday by a vote of 56-42)

WASHINGTON - The Senate has rejected a Republican energy plan that calls for opening an Alaska wildlife refuge and some offshore waters to oil development. Supporters of the measure couldn't get the needed 60 votes to overcome a Democratic-led filibuster threat.

Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said more domestic oil production is needed to keep prices in check and to reduce U.S. dependence on oil imports.

Opponents said areas such as the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and coastal waters that have been off limits to drilling for 25 years ought to remain that out of bounds to oil companies. The GOP measure, defeated Tuesday by a vote of 56-42, would have allowed coastal states to get a waiver to the offshore drilling ban.

Gas is $4.00 a gallon, and the Democrats are filibustering against drilling for oil. The Democrats are wholly controlled by environmental groups that lobby in Washington. When the environmentalists get the kick in the tail they’ve earned, we’ll have more energy.

McCain was the only goofball to raise his hand in the TV debate when asked if anyone believed in global warming.
I know someone here has the freeze frame from that debate.

Oh Lord, why we are stuck with McCain?

The upside is that this is a Dem Congress. Another negative enhancement to their resume. We need to get them to defeat some more commonsense legislation prior to November.

Every Gas station in their states should have their pictures and names posted by the price on the pumps with the message; He/she voted against lower gas prices by increasing domestic supply!

Coleman (R-MN)
Collins (R-ME)
Dole (R-NC)
Martinez (R-FL)

Inhofe (R-OK) McCain (R-AZ)

Imhofe is strongly pro-energy, too. There is no excuse for slacking in the middle of a crisis.

Wonder how our beloved presidential nominee voted?

From the article...

"Sen. John McCain, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, was not present for the vote."

He took the Obama way out.

McCain couldn’t even be bothered to cast a vote on this.

I’m sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to vote for this guy, and just two months ago I was defending him on this board.

From the Pelosi news conference of 05-07-08:

‘Drilling is the failed energy policy of yesterday that has brought us
record gas prices today’.

There is a benefit to having permanent bureaucrats. Just like a careerist any profession is better than someone who dabbles in and out. And, if you are going to have turnover in the bureaucracy, they become beholden to their special interest to get the job once the government job is over. It happens now.

No, the only way to curb the bureaucracy is to starve it of money and staff. And limit its intended scope.

Taxpayers furnish them with rental cars and PROBABLY we are paying for their fuel so they don’t care what happens to us little peon taxpayers to whom them have taken much from and given little in return.

we have a second SPR--it's called ANWR

It is only a strategic asset if you are capable of using it.

It would be like claiming a nuclear arsenal by saying all we have to do is mine the uranium, process the fuel, build the rockets and warheads and we are all set to go.

Good Lord, get out there and SCREAM THIS TO THE SKIES!!!!

That's worked so well on every other issue. For instance, the ILLEGAL immigration problem. Yep, that's worked so well.

We don't have any leaders in this country, they have all sold us out.

PATHETIC!

Drill the Bakken. It's not offshore, it's not in Alaska, and it's got more oil than either. It just needs a bigger pipeline; as it's being developed, let the oil companies put their profits into advanced drilling technology to get more oil out of the Bakken.

Oh yeah, I'm Cogitator: meanwhile, develop carbon sequestration and atmospheric CO2 extraction technologies.

Um, not exactly. The pro-drilling side got 42, not 56.
