Digitek digoxin tablets recalled: Possible double dose released by accident
The Heart ^ | April 29, 2008 | Shelly Wood

Morristown, NJ - The manufacturer of Digitek digoxin tablets is recalling the product, saying that it may have accidentally released pills that are double the normal thickness, carrying twice the normal dose [1].

Digoxin is used in the treatment of arrhythmias and heart failure, and a double dose could cause toxicity, most notably in patients with renal failure. According to a press release from Digitek's manufacturer, Actavis, digitalis toxicity "can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure, cardiac instability, and bradycardia," and even death.

The FDA is alerting doctors and the public to the recall via its MedWatch program. The agency notes that several reports of illness and injury have been reported. Digitek is distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals under a Bertek label and by UDL Laboratories under a UDL label, the Actavis press release notes.

My mother-in-law just received her letter from Walgreens. The recall covers digoxin bought from Walgreens from April 2007 - April 2008. This "accident" took a full year of dispensing error before being caught??

Maybe I had better toss the ones I have hanging around my neck—and in the refrigerator at home.

Likewise, my mother took the over-dose, dispensed by Walgreens.

She did have many of the symptoms.

According to their web page, unless you were hospitalized or died, you can’t participate in the law suit.

Hi Tennessee Girl!

The generic manufacturer of Digitek sent out a press release two weekends ago to all drug distributors that there is a possibility that some lots may contain an inconsistent amount of active ingredient. Immediately upon receiving this information, every pharmacy I know, including Walgreens who I work for, pulled this drug from the shelf and began substituting the brand name drug Lanoxin, or Digoxin. We began the process of contacting everyone in our computers who we have record of having dispensed Digitek to within that time frame.

The good news is that there is no report of anyone having experienced anything outside of normal. All retail pharmacies give out this drug hundreds of times every month, and if there had been a major mess up at the manufacturing plant there would be stories out there by now (especially because Big Pill is such a target of hate.)

Make sure Mom is getting the new replacement, either the brand name Lanoxin or the generic Digoxin. And if it will make her feel better she can talk to the doc, and schedule a check up if she hasn’t been feeling well. I have not seen any doctors make any changes to prescriptions.

Sorry for the freak out! I always wonder whats it like on the other side of the counter. I promise, no one is trying to kill you!

(Oh, and it’s not letting me read the article because I’m not a member. But it’s from WedMD, which is a commercial site and not something I base my decisions on, and it has a sensationalist tone. I’m going by real life. I’ve worked 200 hours since this news came out and I’m telling you what I’ve experienced during my evil overtime stretch.)

granny....I can’t thank you enough!
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!

I called 911 to take my dad to the hospital 2 weeks ago. He appeared to be going into convulsions or into cardiac arrest.

The initial diagnosis from the med-techs on the scene was low blood pressure.

After they IV’d him with fluids in the hospital...they kept him overnight and released him the next day!

THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!

"The good news is that there is no report of anyone having experienced anything outside of normal."

Perhaps, you mean Walgreens has no report of anyone having experienced anything outside of normal. However, "The FDA is alerting doctors and the public to the recall via its MedWatch program. The agency notes that several reports of illness and injury have been reported."
