An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).

Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

We should thank YOU and the other Chinese posters. Please keep supplying updates and information: This story is “fading” in the news media, but I know the death toll is still climbing, and many survivors are in a difficult situation.

She is a girl looks like 3 years old.She never speak but always crying for taking too much scare. No one know her name and age.
She was found under the body of her "parents",both of them are dead for protecting the girl from the falling floor slab.
Many people in the hospital wanted to adopt her when they saw her and heard about this tragedy at that time.
several days later for now,it was heard that her real parents were found. They are not at home in quake and they finally saw her on TV when they are looking for her.
Who are the two people who protected the girl by their own life?No one knows.

Writing from Shanghai.

We are wondering when the “natural” disasters are going to be seriously compunded by the “man-made” disasters in construction standards here: (1) Huge dams, (2) nuclear power plants, (3) water quality desecration (4) high-rise construction, (5) . . . (6) . . . &c.

I decided to write to you as I normally write, but I will be very happy to write any words or sentences in simple English or different words so you can understand them better.

Just let me know which sentences are not understood, and I will write them again differently (rewrite them).

You can ask here on this “thread” we are talking on now, or you can do it with “Private Reply”, so that we can talk privately through our mail boxes at this website (”FReepmail” is what we call it on this website).

You can talk privately with your other Chinese friends using the private mail boxes here, too.

I saw that news on the deaths this morning. It is not unexpected, but is still staggering. I believe I also read that a call had gone out for MILLIONS of tents. I am hoping it was a typo, or a mis-translation. I know the U.S. flew in some (just a drop in the bucket, though.) Does anyone else have more info. on this (and, who is responding and how)?

thanks for that.
I understand the words and phrasing but sometimes i'm not very sure the indwelling meaning of whole expression by the writer if it's a little abstract ,complicated and concealed. It's better they just tell the core conclusion they want to describe.Sometimes our different language and thoughts may mislead us to wrong way. But I think I got your meaning of that reply, just not very sure at that time.Well,I am always not very sure about every reply of people here. :)
Thanks again for your reply,I appreciate that.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday again called on international community to provide tents first among relief donations to its quake-hit Sichuan Province, saying approximately 3.3 million tents are needed.
So far 400,000 tents have been transported to the quake-hit areas, which were far from enough, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang at a regular press conference.
He said the disaster areas were also in urgent need of such relief materials as blankets, clothes, quilts, food, medical equipment, medicines as well as telecommunications and engineering facilities.
Currently, foreign countries had promised to donate 151,900 tents, among which 11,500 tents had been delivered to the quake areas, Qin added.

BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao visited two tent manufacturers in east China's Zhejiang Province on Thursday, urging them to produce as many as possible to meet needs of the quake-hit zone.
Hu also urged them to ensure the quality of their products.
The Chinese government said it needs some three million tents to house the nearly 5 million people displaced by the 8 magnitude earthquake on May 12 in southwestern Sichuan province.

Sorry, I haven’t been here for a while, so I just couldn’t recall what brought up this conversation. Anyway, you’re right about the freedom thing. Our government is indeed making great efforts controlling the speech or whatever on the Internet. I’ve clearly realized that, and so have my friends around. However, it doesn’t stop us from criticizing the corruptions and something like that, maybe not enough. And I guess it would take a long way for us to change that embarrassing situation. Just like the movie BATTLE FOR HADITHA and its impressing intermezzo, or whatever you call it, LIES LIES LIES by Ministry, we’ll never be allowed to shoot a movie like that. Regarding this, we really have a lot more to learn from you guys. But one thing I cannot agree with is the “suppression on Tibetans”. I think you probably read too much CNN. ^_^

Nice to meet you here, too. And thanks for your hospitality. Actually, it's difficult to understand some of you guys who use a lot of slang, euphemism or even some black humors. So I don't come over too often. Anyway, thanks, Joya. o(∩_∩)o...

Wow, this is the first time I ever hear a native American say that your national media is biased. I always run into some of your fellows who are constantly bashing Chinese state media, blah blah blah. But they never see or admit their own flaw. And that’s the thing that annoys me.

You are right about Americans’ sense of humor and sarcasm. I’ve failed to distinguish them a thousand times. And that makes me a fool...

You are a nice person, undoubtedly. Have a wonderful day!

Hello Phoebe,

I am very glad you wrote to me.

Are you able to get online very often?

I will try to avoid using slang.

Your friend,
