An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

Chinese sleeper, eh?

Your information about the contributions of the Chinese peoples to victims of other world disasters is very good to hear. It gives a lot of hope that relations are improving around the world, that people are helping each other out when disasters strike.
You are right that every nation has many different people with many different attitudes.
The people in my country at the moment are very divided in their beliefs and attitudes about many issues. We are at a crossroads, like we were before our Civil War in 1860 A.D. when we went to war with each other over the issue of slavery.
People here on each side of this current philosophical/political/religious divide 148 years later are finding it very difficult, if not impossible, to compromise on their most deeply held beliefs. It is making family life difficult as even families now are divided in what they believe.
You will hear many contradictory things coming from our politicians. The contradictions reflect the division in this country, as the different politicians here represent different groups of people here.
Underneath it all, everyone wishes what is best for human beings in our country and in the world. We are simply in great disagreement about how to achieve the best for everyone. Although there are some here who believe that human beings matter less than the planet Earth that we live on, and human needs should be secondary to the health and well being of the planet.
It may be easier lately to have a kind and loving discussion with those of you on the other side of the world than with some in our own families. It is very ironic and sad. We have changed so that at best we now simply try to be polite with our family members and avoid discussing the disagreements.
Amid all the tragedy, it was good to hear that the pandas at the reserve are okay, even though 3 of them are missing.
Our news reported that some people there had died, however; and that was sad to hear.
We need the beautiful and cute things in the world to help us balance the tragic moments. Thank you for the pictures.

Chinese BBS:
there is a unspoiled school building in BeiChuan county
a reaporter find four analogs in other countys that all at the quake center area
and the reaporter discovered there was a good supervisor for all these five unspoiled school buildings when they were builded
so suspicion creep into people’s mind:why the others school building so flimsy
“there was a good supervisor for all these five unspoiled school buildings when they were builded”
One man CAN make a difference. I’m thinking of George Bailey times 5,000 (an American movie classic). I hope the supervisor survived the quake as well, as well as all of those students he saved.
Chinese BBS:
some volunteers said that some local government maybe misprision and lied to central government ,certainly some local goverment are work hard
these volunteers said central government and PLA all are heros, but someone who work for local gov are really bad eggs
I hope the supervisor survived the quake as well
he is safe, but he would not to publish his name
Well,I must admit that not all the sentence's meaning are understanded by me for my poor english. But I can feel the sense and goodwill from within.
It's really not easy for us,common civilians,to discuss in foreigh language. It's good to hear intelligent and calm words.

Thanks for posting the rescue dog pix.
Such a lack of decorum.
It's no way to treat the "father of the opus",
The man who "proudly posts without first reading the thread",
The great historian of FR.
I'm Shocked!
Drat. Regardless, God's in His Heaven and all's right with the world.
