An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale has hit China's Sichuan province. The tremor was felt across the entire region - shaking buildings in the capital, Beijing, as well as the Thai capital, Bangkok, and Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. US Geological Survey said the quake struck 57 miles north-west of the city of Chengdu at 2.29pm local time (6.28am GMT).
Some 10 million people live in Chengdu.

I thought that was kind of weird. Usually there will be an update in parentheses added to the title (as in “moderator, please update this thread”), but in this case the entire title was changed.
China’s state-run Xinhua news agency cited local disaster relief officials saying 3,000 to 5,000 people were estimated to have died in just one district of Sichuan, Beichuan County.
A further 10,000 people were injured in the county, where officials said 80 percent of buildings had collapsed.

Two 5.1 shakers within the hour. The new ones are on a line moving to the northeast like a fault line is giving way along its length rather than sitting and rumbling in one spot.
Where does that put it in relation to Three Gorges Dam?
Current death count is now at 8533, and will continue to rise.
I have no idea where the dam is located relative to this event. 7.8 is not enough to seriously affect the dam anyway. It would take something near to 9.0 to bounce that significantly.

The 7.3 earthquake in Alaska a couple years ago did little damage aside from moving the Alyeska Pipeline a few feet on its piers. It was felt in New Orleans, which is a couple thousand miles away.
No doubt the injuries in this earthquake are from heavy objects falling on people, which would include buildings that collapse. Anybody out in the open would get a ride for a few seconds and no damage.

I don't speak Chinese but they do seem to have earthquake coverage. Mostly interviews with people standing outside.
The coverage seems to be heavily censored. The only damage pictures always have swarms of unsoiled smiling Chinese paramilitary types standing around.
Another 5.1 just now. These are not serious but probably make some people nervous for a few seconds.
