In “The Gulag Archipelago” Solzhenitsyn related the story of a peasant who was ordered to go to the next village and bring back a large bust of Stalin. When he got there he found that the bust was too unwieldy to carry, so he took off his belt, looped it around the neck of the bust, put it over his shoulder, and went on his way. He got twenty years for terrorism, if I remember correctly.

The supposedly freest country in the world slavishly prostrates itself to thought crime laws.

A kid in Jena, La. dispayed a noose while protesting a demonstation by Sharpton and Jackson and received one year in prison for it recently.

In that context, I don't think you need a BS hate crimes statute to recognize that displaying a noose is really a way of threatening a lynching. If what you described really happened, that kid belongs in prison.

Seems like anytime a noose shows up it’s on someone’s door who is either being investigated or is a deranged attention starved person.

By your logic Nazi symbols would have long ago been outlawed but they haven’t.

This is a gesture, it won’t hold up.

Thank Clarence Thomas. SCOTUS already upheld laws banning cross-burning. Burning the American flag is still protected by the First Amendment though, even if the people desecrating our flag are foreign invaders waving foreign flags who promise violent conquest in our country to try to take back land they lost a long time ago.

What a do-nothing law.

FTA: which makes it a crime to display a noose as a way of harassing or threatening someone.

Threatening and harassing people is already illegal.

Baseball bat, noose, tire iron. Whatever.

Threaten anyone with or without anything and it is a threat. Harass anyone with or with out anything and it is harassment.

Our CT legislators have nothing to do, they insist on staying in session and blathering on and on. Can’t wait for the next thing to pop into someone’s mind and demand it be a law. Good Heavens!
BTW didn’t the lady Professor that declared nooses were left everywhere around her found to be lying?

You make an excellent point.

Displaying a noose = prison? I guess the First Amendment means nothing to you.

Depends entirely on the context. If the noose is intended as an immediate threat, then absolutely you should go to prison... The same way the First Amendment protects speech, but not death threats.

Huh? The context is everything. I don't support outlawing nooses in general. However, if you're trying to make a death threat, then that is already illegal.

a convoluted ruling that allowed the ban but only if intimidation is the aim

...i think...

Thomas dissented but not to protect cross lighting

and Ginsburg and Souter were against the ban I think....Anton for it....another black mark

in any event what bothered me was that the VA law was for on private property too.

So if I went deer hunting, and hung a deer that I shot with a noose, it is a HATE CRIME? To who - the deer?

Should the LASSO be banned?? That would make cattle uset if cowboys use the LASSO on runaway cattle!!

Jeez, CT first you were trying to control where UConn football can play their games against Norte Dame, then you came up with this F**Ked UP law. Why didn't you do something about BUSINESS TAXES to lower them. Did that stupid delivery tax get passed?? That'll HELP businesses so much in Connecticut!

Does the law say each noose has to have the full 13 twists, or is a simple half-hitch too many?

Funny, when I think of a noose,Hangin’ Judge Roy Bean comes to mind. His “law” was so often arbitrary he was as much a lyncher as an executioner.
He strung up American,Indian and Mexican “outlaws” mostly.Perhaps he hanged a black cowboy or two,I don’t know.

But obviously political correctness declares the noose was used on blacks being lynched in the Old South only.

The ropes in the hands of the angry mobs facing Marshal Dillon in front of the Dodge City jail must have been looped into cats cradles or were attached to big western yo-yos because the prisoners they were after were almost always white.
Also,Nazis murdered with nooses, sometimes as many as a dozen at a time.

Well,at least the only politically correct historical victims of the unjust noose weren’t killed by gunfire or else the 2nd Amendment would be in REAL danger.
