President Bush weighed in as well at a White House meeting Wednesday with Republicans. But Hunters stance reflects what has been a steady undercurrent of criticism on the right. In trying to pull together the wartime spending bill and still meet other budget priorities, Democrats argue that it is unrealistic for Rice to expect the full $500 million at this time.
In his letter to Bush, for example, Hunter argues that the $500 million has no place in the bill much like other programs not intended to support military operations in the combat theaters of the global war on terrorism.
Strengthening security cooperation between the United States and Mexico remains important to our overall efforts of preventing illegal drugs and other contraband from crossing our Southern land border, he writes. However, Mexicos questionable drug enforcement efforts and reputation for corruption within its government, police and military forces require that we proceed cautiously with the use of American taxpayer funds for this purpose.
Hunter was joined in his letter by four other Republicans: Reps. Cliff Stearns of Florida and Trent Franks of Arizona, also a member of Armed Services, and Reps. Dana Rohrabacher and Ed Royce, both fellow Californians who sit on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Good luck with that there, Duncan. Let us know how that turns out.
Just gotta love Duncan Hunter!
The five families that have ruled Mexico for almost five hundred years expect their payments on time.

Well said by the man who should be the GOP nominee instead of the guy who is it because it’s “his turn”.
Hey, Hunter: Might as well start hammering your man, McCain, about this too.
If Tom Tancredo hadn’t run for President, Duncan Hunter would have gotten a lot farther. Perhaps the primaries may have turned out differently.
MINE TOO!!!!!!!!!
Duncan Hunter bttt
“Mexicos questionable drug enforcement efforts”
Hell of an understatement. 500 million would go along way to building some of a fence on the border.
If he were running as the Pub candidate he’d have just lost 500 million votes, haa! Actually, it is scarey that a Congressional representative really makes sense and isn’t pandering to probable votes...that won’t come his way anyway! Cannot believe McCain cozied up to La Raza.
Don’t overlook the write-in option.
Thanks for the idea, but the second best thing I can do is make sure B Hussein O doesn’t get elected and local conservatives do.
Hunter has been on top of both National Security and the border issues for over two decades.
To bad others didn’t figure out what we knew already
Are there really people still around these days that think that they ever had a choice? There is no choice, the choice was made for you and me.
Yeah...hubby and I talk about that a lot. Your point is well taken. So sad, though.
Hunter was my first choice too.
Hunter to WH: Pull Mexico aid..
WH to Duncan....when pigs fly!!!
What, he would have had 2% instead of 1%?
