Seems to happen mostly at SOCIALIST-GOVERNMENT hospitals.

I saw a show on Discover (I think) that covered the history of copper. Copper has strong anti-bacterial properties and some hospitals are experimenting with using Copper for things like door handles elevator buttons.

Washing your hands might also help.
