After Words: Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party’s Buried Past", Bruce Bartlett interviewed by Clarence Page

About the Program:

In "Wrong on Race: The Democratic Party’s Buried Past", Bruce Bartlett argues that the Democratic Party had a racist past and he says there’s an unfair perception of America’s two national parties. In his book, he contends that Democratic Presidents and congressmen of the past supported racial segregation and the "Jim Crow" laws that dominated the Confederate states. Mr. Bartlett discussed his book with Clarence Page, syndicated columnist at the Chicago Tribune.

The Jacksons and Sharptons keep the blacks in slavery.

blacks are more interested about what any party is going to do for them now then they are old history.

the fact that they don't see the social programs of the 60s was harmful to them is hard to overcome

i am currently reading some slave narratives written in the 1920s

slaves recounting the past were also lamenting that the GOP never live up to their Freedom promises either and then the New Deal came along and snared blacks...especially Northern ones.

It's not hard to go back in history to the Federalists and anti-Federalists and see where either party was wrong

I know this sorta talk is great for politically correct GOP who love to bash my region and parse everything political through race but beyond that it's just history.

Now if the GOP ever manages over 10% with blacks again then they can rewrite that as they see fit but the only way that happens anytime soon is to nominate a black liberal for GOP Potus candidate....we're half way there now

I watched this interview and it was pretty good. My only problem w/ it was the author favors repartations and I truly believe that is a mistake.

Reparations will do blacks no good whatsovere, they will only postpone the ultimate realization among blacks that they have to fend for themselves, just like every other race has figured out.

W/regard to reparations, I'm not a descendant of any slave owner or overseer.

Can Rev. Jeremiah Wright say the same?

He did at least say 'limited' reparations. He's also for continuing affirmative action. In any case, I agree with you 100%. Has anyone ever asked the slave-holding nations of Africa to reinburse them for what THEY did to them. Yet slavery in Africa continues to this day. BTW: He also sharply criticized a prominent democrat at the time for being too harsh on a group of revolutionary communists. He apparently put them all on a boat and sent them to Russia! lol!

It’s about time someone did a study of this. Historically, the Dems were always on the side of the slaveholders and the segregationists.

Pre-1960s, absolutely.

IMO the GOP missed a huge opportunity in the 60s by allowing the Democratic Party to switch sides and become the standard-bearer for civil rights.

As their only real accomplishment in the last 50 years, we are still paying the price for this.

"The ex-Klansman [democrat senator, Robert Byrd] allegedly ended his ties with the group in 1943. He may have stopped paying dues, but he continued to pay homage to the KKK. Republicans in West Virginia discovered a letter Sen. Byrd had written to the Imperial Wizard of the KKK three years after he says he abandoned the group. He wrote: 'The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia' and 'in every state in the Union.'

The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act -- supported by a majority of those 'mean-spirited' Republicans -- for more than 14 hours. He also opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court's two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. In fact, the ex-Klansman had the gall to accuse Justice Thomas of 'injecting racism' into the Senate hearings. Meanwhile, author Graham Smith recently discovered another letter Sen. Byrd wrote after he quit the KKK, this time attacking desegregation of the armed forces."--Michelle Malkin
