In support of the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright
The Dalton Daily Citizen ^ | March 28, 2008 | Presiding Bishop William P. DeVeaux

Posted on 05/10/2008 11:43:57 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

We, the Sixth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, representing more than 80,000 members and clergy in Georgia, express support for our clergy colleague, the Reverend Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., retired pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. Rev. Wright is a renowned religious scholar, nurturing pastor and outstanding preacher. Our friend and fellow minister has been vilified in the national media for practicing the great commission to go ye preach and baptize in my name.

We repudiate the irresponsible and shameful behavior of the national media for replaying and sensationalizing Rev. Wright’s words out of context simply to accommodate a salacious sound byte. Quite frankly African Americans articulate and use language differently than whites by juxtaposing words to paint indelible psychological pictures. For example, in the overplayed sound byte Rev. Wright was not cursing America or its people. Rather he was pointing out historical and modern day incidents of racial intolerance or violence that were both heinous and damnable.

The charges of racism against Rev. Wright are false, as it is doubtful that the United Church of Christ, a white denomination, would have appointed him to pastor one of its churches. For African American clergy, controversy is to be expected as we preach a liberation theology that condemns any effort to persecute human beings.

We applaud the Democratic Presidential candidate, Senator Barack Obama, for his strength of character and integrity in refusing to denigrate Pastor Wright. We laud the Senator’s unflinching honesty as well as his leadership and great courage in illuminating the real and painful truth of race in America. Senator Obama boldly placed the issue of race squarely on the table for further discussion and as an impetus to accomplish the kind of change that he has espoused throughout the Democratic presidential campaign.

William P. DeVeaux

Presiding Bishop

Sixth Episcopal District

The African Methodist Episcopal Church

He’s loathesome, just another Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. Snake oil salesmen preaching hate, bigotry, and worse. Living in a million dollar mansion paid for by his congregation, many of whom are single mothers who work two and three jobs and raise children and grandchildren without benefit of a father in the home. There’s so much wrong with Wright, so much wrong with Obama, and this upcoming election is dead serious. Obama is the emperor with no clothes, already ‘offended’ at anything McCain says. (These next few months are going to be a rough ride, so tighten your seat belts.)

sensationalizing Rev. Wright’s words out of context

OK, Mr. Preacher... give us the context that any of those soundbites could be put in to make it more acceptable to people like us Freepers.

The UCC doesn't appoint pastors, and anyone who was formed in it and knows it as well as I do will have NO DOUBT that IF they appointed them, Jeremiah Wright would have been their #1 choice.

Bullsh*t, preacher. A lie is a lie is a lie. Stick that in your matchbook-cover divinity degree and smoke it.

(a) Christian Churches often get into controversy. Regardless of the race of the pastor.

(b) We do not tolerate lies in our sermons.

(c) Hate is not part of Christianity.

(d) Racism is not Christian, either.

(d)What I have heard from Wright and other liberation theology teachings promotes the antithesis of liberation. It promotes a victim mentality, which leads to enslavement.

In this case, that "name" is a false image conjured up by this sick bastard.

At its April meeting, the UCC's 90-member Executive Council passed a resolution supporting Trinity UCC in Chicago, which has been under a cloud of politically-charged scrutiny since a few clips of its senior pastor's sermons have aired repeatedly on TV....

In addition to celebrating Trinity UCC's varied ministries, the resolution also recognizes that "churches may be on different paths on our journey with the Still Speaking God."

"We stand in solidarity with and support of the local congregations of the United Church of Christ as they live out their charge to be prophetic witnesses to church, community and society," it reads.
