DAN DIDIO ON DCU: DECISIONS (Superheroes to join actual political parties & endorse candidates)

Everyone’s talking about politics these days, and in September, that will come to include the heroes and characters of the DC Universe.

The place for the discussion: DCU Decisions, a four-part miniseries shipping every other week in September and October, written by Bill Willingham and Judd Winick, with art and covers by Stephane Roux. The heroes…they’re drawn into the political arena both by circumstance and by the actions of one of their own. A look at the art to the right makes that latter part pretty clear.

We spoke with DCU Executive Editor Dan DiDio about the story, the idea behind it, and why in the world anyone would willingly bring politics into a place that’s politics-free these days.

"For the first time, we’ll be having our characters make true political stands in regards to their leanings, as well as what motivates them to be heroes, and what they believe is necessary for their world and their country to move in the direction they believe to be the right one...this is about heroes choosing or naming a political affiliation in regards to their own beliefs, which include, of course, being a hero."

Yeah, but in the recent series involving the Civil War (I don’t read comics much, so forgive me if I can’t be specific), doesn’t he fully support the government’s registration act? Forgive me, but anyone supporting that kind of act from the government doesn’t sound like a Republican.

I purposefully didn't consider that story because it was crap and the heroes often acted wildly out of character in it. However, I should note that it was written by a bunch of leftists (including Mark Millar-a talented British writer, but admitted socialist) as their "indictment of the patriot act" and, as a result, the ones who supported the act were supposed to be Republicans.

Spider-man is a newspaper guy, but he's on the outs with his editor because of the editorial slant (BTW, the guy who plays Jonah Jameson in the movies is probably one of the most perfectly cast characters in the history of comic book movies.) I still don't think Spider-man is very aligned politically. He's the kind of guy who keeps meaning to vote, but forgets to register or loses his voter registration card.

I think the Hulk is a libertarian.

I still think Spidey's a lib but, yeah, I'd be willing to bet he isn't registered and/or regularly forgets to vote. That's typical Peter Parker.

But, speaking of libertarians, it's interesting to note that his co-creator Steve Ditko was a serious, serious, student of Ayn Rand and objectivism. In fact, a few years ago underground cartoonish Peter Bagge (himself a libertarian and contributor to Reason) did a pretty funny strip where Peter got a hold of a copy of "Atlas Shrugged" and let it completely transform his "with great power..." ethos.

DEMOCRATS: Dick Tracy...

Dick Tracy a democrat? Have you seen what he does with the average suspect in that strip? He makes Jack Baurer and Dirty Harry look like Michael Dukakis.

superheros are about “there is a right and a wrong”

somehow the people who are left wing fruitcakes have no clue.

They draw nice but can’t write to save their lives.

The golden age wonderwoman always struck me as a reformed libera. Kind of a refugee from feminism because she left the island vacume with Steve Trevor for the real world WW II scenario.

I’d say the Spidey movies do an almost perfect job of casting...

I tend to agree but what was Raimi smoking when he cast Kirstin Dunst as Mary Jane?

It will be interesting, watching the way that the comic writers will have to twist these characters to fit the round peg into the square hole.... in other words, after years/decades of some of these heroes “protecting the innocent” and then find out they’re pro-abortion? That’ll be hard to reconcile.

Hal Jordan didn’t go crazy anymore. Parallax was a parasite that took him over. This is a copout to a lot of the DCU and a lot of readers, but it was a way to bring Hal back and make him a hero again, and it seems to have worked.

Black Canary: Liberal Democrat. Longtime girlfriend of Green Arrow. Couldn’t live with Ollie for more than two minutes, if she wasn’t a lib.

I don't know. They're supposed to be pretty fire and ice. I know she rolls her eyes at his self-righteousness, but she could still agree with it but not his method of expressing it. Dunno. The recent Smallville version was a conservative talk show host.

Kirsten Dunst is a cute girl, but I always pictured MJ as more... you know... voluptuous and sassy, I guess.

> I think the Hulk is a libertarian.

The Hulk is the ultimate single-issue voter. His only concern is what Hulk wants.

FWIW, I remember an interview with Batman writer Denny O'Neil where he said that he always assumed Bats was a conservative who voted for Reagan.

But who would Angel and the Ape vote for?

I thought of that, but is his city still supposed to be Chicago in the post Chester Gould era? I assumed it was a fictional, unnamed, city at this point, ala Metropolis or Gotham.
