Hezbollah claims victory as Lebanon gov't U-turns

Hezbollah scored a major victory Saturday after four days of fighting across Lebanon, when the Lebanese army reversed two cabinet resolutions that kicked off the fighting on Wednesday.

The resolutions, if implemented, would have removed the chief of Beirut Airport's security, Major General Wafiq Shukeir, who has ties to Hezbollah. It also would have dismantled Hezbollah's private telephone network.

Instead, Prime Minister Fouad Siniora announced on Saturday that he was putting the two issues into the hands of the army, which said in a statement that it was keeping Shukeir at his post and that it would handle the Hezbollah communications network in a way "that would not harm public interest and the security of the resistance."

Hezbollah's television station, Al-Manar, said the "Lebanese national opposition" would continue its civil rebellion until its demands for an amendment to the parliamentary election law and the formation of a unity government in which the opposition had veto power were met.

At least 27 people died in the four days of fighting.

Late Thursday night, Hezbollah forces took over areas of western Beirut, mainly the Shi'ite neighborhoods, within a few hours. They faced little resistance.

The Lebanese government just fell to Hezbollah, except the government doesn't know it's dead just yet. Hezbollah can do whatever it likes, whenever it likes.

This Stinks!

Indeed it does. A very unfortunate circumstance, to say the least.

a very unfortunate circumstance

Very unfortunate for Lebanon. If Hezbollah is actually running the country, then in the next war there is no need for the Israelis to differentiate between Hezbollah and Lebanon. Say goodbye to your infrastructure, Lebanon.

"Hezbollah can do whatever it likes"

As though there is something new about that...

I would say that is a very astute comment, and you point out the logical outcome of any new Israeli involvement. And Lebanon is, and has been previously, such a beautiful country in the midst of Islamic madness. Oh well...we have what we have. Very sad developments.

From what I’ve heard, the Syrian economy would collsapse over time if Syria doesn’t have a kleptocratic puppet government in Lebanon. It’s too bad the mandate to disarm Hezbollah hasn’t shown any teeth.

“From what I’ve heard, the Syrian economy would collsapse over time if Syria doesn’t have a kleptocratic puppet government in Lebanon. It’s too bad the mandate to disarm Hezbollah hasn’t shown any teeth.”

The way things work in the Middle East, the Syrian bloodsucking operation of corruption has been leeching off Lebanon for a long time. To what extent now I can’t say.

But there’s no mandate to disarm Hezzbully. The UN is there to discourage arming but is as I understand it totally ineffective and Syria has already restocked the south with plenty of new missiles.

It’s absolutely terrible that the army has publicly backed down to Hezzbully.
Now those thugs will only work faster to take control over the country. They are demanding veto power over everything.

How long before they just demand control entirely?

The Lebanese Army just stabbed its own people in the back. They should make some formal requests for military aid. Crazy? Maybe but still this is really bad.

What did they win? The only thing the Government did was leave the Hezbo communication alone but while even disclosing it's existence it gave Israel the pin point target to basically take down the Hezbos at its discretion.

“Earlier Sunday, [Israeli] Vice Premier Haim Ramon said “Lebanon must be treated as a Hizbullah state. Everything that happens there is the responsibility of Hizbullah. The country is controlled by this terror organization and its government has become irrelevant,” Ramon said at the weekly cabinet meeting.

“The notion that there is another government apart from Hizbullah is entirely fictitious,” added the vice premier.

Ramon's remarks came after Head of Military Intelligence, General Amos Yadlin, provided an intelligence briefing to the cabinet ministers on the recent clashes in Lebanon and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel was paying close attention to the unfolding crisis.”

Hezbollah is now the government whenever it cares to be.
