Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- The chances are good that your health insurance plan covers elective abortions since 46 percent of all health insurance plans in the United States do so. A leading researcher urges pro-life advocates to investigate their plans to find out whether they are unknowingly supporting abortion.
During the Reagan administration, Dr. Robert Moffitt was the deputy secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
He recently gave a speech at the Family Research Council warning that, because most health insurance plans are controlled by secular companies or government officials, many of them pay for abortions.
The money, of course, comes from the premiums that all members of the health plan and/or their employers pay on a monthly basis -- including pro-life advocates.
"Forty-six percent of workers today in employer-based health insurance finance abortion," he said, according to a OneNewsNow report. "I think this is critical."
While pro-life advocates strenuously oppose taxpayer-funded abortions, they may not know they are funding abortions in their health care plan.
"Many of you know people who consider themselves very good, solid citizens [and] who consider themselves pro-life. They go to church on Sunday; but on Monday morning, they finance abortion," OneNewsNow reported Moffitt saying.
"They don't know they finance abortion, they do not conscientiously do it -- but they do it. And they do it through private health insurance. They do it because the plan covers it," Moffitt explained.
Moffitt suggested that employers and employees find out whether their insurance company pays for abortions. If so, he urged pro-life advocates to switch to another health care plan or look to one of the many plans funded by Catholic and Protestant Christian groups that don't include abortion coverage.
This makes me ill!

It is pretty tough, when you work for a large corporation, to say, ‘Gee, all of the policies you offer, support abortion, so I don’t want any health insurance for me or my family.’
Write the BOD, but that and prayer is what you’re left with.
Tax money goes to Planned Parenthood, so we are all funding abortions.
My wife works for a Catholic diocese. How much you wanna bet the premiums paid for by the Sunday collections, in the end go to pay for abortions?
Unless one audits the insurance company books, the diocese or parishioners will never know if their premiums are the same as if the selected abortion coverage vs not allowing it. Just because no diocesan employee can get abortion paid for doesn’t mean it’s not already figured into insurance company set premiums.
My daughter’s baby died at approxmately week 23. She was put in the hospital where labor was induced and it was called an abortion. Technically, it was. So the alternative is to carry the dead baby until nature takes it’s course and miscarriage occurs. In that case, I was told by the nurse it is also listed as abortion.
Abortions are an elective procedure in the vast majority of cases. Its surprising that they are covered as much as they are.
It's cheaper than paying for delivery later?
Insurance pays for birth control pills and viagara...so what’s your point?
The excuse that I’ve heard is that the tax money only goes to non-abortion parts of PP. Yeah, pay for my utilities and I’ll by a sports car, and then I’ll tell you that you didn’t buy the car for me.
Someone help me out here with the founder’s quote of it being abhorrent to make a taxpayer pay for something he morally opposes.
Exactly!
Planned Barrenhood has never actually explained what that means. Are the abortionists also "staff physicians" and are their salaries paid for out of tax money? What do they actually consider the "cost" of an abortion?
And let's not forget that Planned Barrenhood had PROFITS in 2006 of over $100 million on over $1 billion in revenue. So, where are all the calls for congressional hearings on the outrageous profits of Big Abortion?
The expulsion of the mamalian fetus prematurely, particularly at at any time before it is viable; miscarriage.
So historically the term included natural miscarriages, and you would have to specify when an abortion was deliberately induced. The same dictionary defines "abortionist" as One who produces criminal abortions.
The media wants people to believe that only religious fanatics and men hostile to women's rights are opposed to abortion. In ancient times the Hippocratic oath condemned abortions, and the Roman poet Ovid (author of The Art of Love) viewed abortions with horror. Neither Hippocrates nor Ovid was a Christian, let alone a Christian fundamentalist.
I'm sorry to hear of the death of your grandchild.
