Senator Barack Obama surged ahead of his rival, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, in the count of superdelegates on Friday, the first time since the outset of the race that Mrs. Clinton has lost the lead in one of her few remaining trump cards.
Mr. Obama racked up seven endorsements in the last 24 hours from superdelegates, the Democratic Party insiders who are granted autonomy to support whomever they wish at the convention in August. One, a New Jersey congressman, switched his allegiance away from Mrs. Clinton, allowing the Illinois senator to pull ahead of his opponent, according to the latest New York Times count.
The Timess tally shows Mr. Obama with 266 superdelegates against 263 for Mrs. Clinton, based on telephone polls conducted with CBS News as well as public endorsements. A separate count by The Associated Press shows Mr. Obama running even with Mrs. Clinton. And a measure by ABC News showed the Illinois senator ahead as of this morning.
The superdelegate count was one of the few mathematical areas where Mrs. Clinton still maintained an advantage in the race. She trails her opponent in the popular vote and the total Democratic delegate count.
Superdelegates represent up to a fifth of the Democratic convention delegation, and have historically supported the front-runner at the convention. More than 250 superdelegates have yet to publicly announce their decisions.
On Thursday, Mr. Obama picked up the support of Representative Donald Payne of New Jersey, who told The Star-Ledger of Newark that he was switching away from Mrs. Clinton after thinking through one of the most difficult decisions I have made. Peter DeFazio, an Oregon congressman, also said he would back Mr. Obama.
The endorsements accelerated on Friday. Ed Espinoza, a Californian who is a member of the partys national

How about when she goes before the Convention August 23rd to say, rhetorically, "When I chose to stay in the race--against all odds four months ago, and with many millions of dollars of my own money at stake, er uh, at risk--who could possibly have known that Barrack would choose to visit Ft. Marcy Park on a sultry August evening?!"

or the Gov of Ohio.
I am so enjoying this. I’m certainly no Obama fan and don’t want him anywhere near the WH but he doesn’t make me clench my jaw when I see him.
I thoroughly despise Hil and Bill.
And what’s so great about it is the way it’s happening. She didn’t slowly lose followers and have time to see it coming. She was so sure she had it in the bag and this was totally not anticipated.
She got the smack down!!! Bwahahaha.
Hillary's Response: "Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!.....and it ain't over now! OBAMA.....HE'S A DEAD MAN! RICHARDSON.....DEAD! NEIDEMEYER!!!.....
May the best man win!
Mitt pulled out when he was actually ahead in the delegate count which did not make sense. Mitt has cash which Mr McCain needs.. It’ll be Romney.
Never before in my life have I observed such a nasty, sinister racist.
Every superdel who comes out now is a come-lately, not worth their political spit in courage. At least the ones who backed Obama when he was up-and-coming (before he’s down-and-going) have to be given a little credit for going against the aging and now-proven-rusty Clinton Machine.
For our Nations sake, I truly hope so!
I think you're using a more classic representation of what the VP can often bring as an attraction by virtue of his or her presence on the ticket. Much of Hillary's constituency was actually in her camp, however, by "virtue" of their aversion to BHO and all that he represents, which Hillary has been kind enough to see that we would come to learn about him because of her growingly-perceived needs and by the extra time afforded through Operation Chaos.
In short, with BHO at the top of the ticket, other than die-hards who'll vote straight dhim no matter what, so-called blue-collar white workers (non egg-head, non-blacks, as the Forehead was quick to call them) will not become--in significant numbers--enamored of a BHO-topped ticket by there being a crusty, Huma-handled pantsuit on the bottom.
BHO remains the champion of only 25% of the nation's electorate, a figure brought to only 38% after adding Hillary's constituency, the same figure whether she's at the top of the ticket or not.

That she's available and fully committed should Obama be Arkancided or Torricellied.
It’s all about negotiation now.
She’s negotiating her exit like any good power broker with leverage to work with.
So the question we should all be asking is: How much is her exit worth the Democratic Pary?
Is it worth the VP slot? That much? Or will they let her twist in the wind of public mockery for a few more days and expect her to take less, then?
Is less the Senate Majority Leader slot? SCOTUS Justice HRC?
All we know is, come hell or high she aint leavin’ until those ‘loans’ she made ‘herself’ are paid back to China with interest
That the party isnt savaging her publicly much yet means VP is still on the table, IMO. Dont damge her too much seems to be the rationale.
Michelle is saying no, Obama might not take her after ‘white people’-gate ... I say come mid next week if she hasnt abandoned her campaign yet, expect an Al Gore shank job. Official endorsement of Obama, etc. Followed by Carter and Xenu and whoever else the Dems are worshipping these days.
The Ohio Gov.’s a Pubbie, and from what I hear, everybody hates his guts. The current buzz in Dem circles is Jim Webb, Sen of VA. If Obama can grab VA, that makes it tough on McCain to make up those votes elsewhere.
They should collaborate on a weird ass book. Maybe get Larry Sinclair involved.
You’re right, who am I thinking of from Ohio, I believe his last name starts with an S (that narrow’s it down/sarc).
Wow! Pretty blatant.
Gov. Strickland of Ohio is a Democrat elected last year. His most popular quality is that he’s not Bob Taft, the GOP governor he replaced. The ineptitude and corruption of the Taft administration ruined the GOP chances in Ohio for a generation.
Oops. Thanks for the correction. Sometimes Google is not my friend.
Also, it’s the Clinton people who are pushing for Hillary to be VP. If Obama thinks Hillary’s made the primary fights hell on earth, it’ll be nothing compared to having her on the ticket. And if elected, she’d be moving to have him impeached from day one.
