It's outlawed under the Utah constitution and that's unlikely to change. But decriminalizing it could mean lesser penalties for bigamy convictions.
I think something needs to happen. Something needs to be changed. It needs to be decriminalized, said Dorothy Allred Solomon.
Solomon is the daughter of Rulon Allred she says she grew up in polygamy and said she had a happy childhood. Allred was murdered in 1977 in a hit ordered by rival polygamist Ervil Lebaron.
What happens when a way of life is outlawed is that it attracts outlaws. And it attracted the worse sort of outlaws in the Lebaron case, she said.
In the wake of the FLDS raid in Texas, there may be a chorus of people close to polygamy here in Utah sounding the same call.
The polygamy statute needs to be revised. Thoroughly revised, said Don Timpson who lives in a polygamous community. The state has to realize that polygamy is not going away.
Attorney general Mark Shurtleff is said to be open to discussion of turning polygamy from a felony crime into a misdemeanor. This could mean that a man convicted of polygamy may spend a year or less in jail instead of several years in prison.
Those opposed to the change fear it will harm innocent victims.

I finally did that too. Everybody got the same socks. Then when they wanted the crazy looking socks I tye dyed them. They got crazy socks all right & I never had to worry about matching them....They weren’t really happy until their friends wanted socks like theirs. You learn to deal with things & make do....Even my oldest Princess Brat Daughter would wear them lol
They should come with a pair and a spare. I even loose my own. When I find a design I like I buy more than one pair because I know one will eventually walk out.
I saw it when my children played in a group of 3. Even numbers seem to be better. I know it wouldn't work well with me. I get mad easily & I could never let any other women boss my children or me around. There would be blood shed if some witch hit my Sassy. I see life so much differently then I did as a teen or young adult. My values & morals seem to get stricter each year I age & I get btchier too.
Its the washer ...Since I got the front loader washer I find socks in the rubber thingy around the door. My old washer ate them I think. If somebody sold them in 3’s I would certainly buy them over just buying a pair.
Nice to know that you think the govt could somehow draw the line @ 3 wives if they couldn't do so at 2. In fact, it would be much harder to do so.
Which is why you don't have much polygamy out there--it's usually bigamy--like the case of a guy arrested this week. (Such bigamy usually involves deception of the other "wives"). It's usually religious polygamy--where women are told more spirit babies need bodies...
...where women are told if they want to be a queen in the celestial kingdom as a goddess...
...and if they want to be perfect as a "god-in-embryo" on earth...
...then they need to obey the prophet's wishes...
Christ talked about Adam and Eve, one couple, as the ideal. The patriarchs were not “blessed” with polygamy. It led to family disasters. Every one of the patriarchs who practiced polygamy ended up with miserable families. Abraham, Jacob, King David, King Solomon ... King David, “man after God’s own heart” was unwilling or unable to guide his many sons from many wives which led to rape and murder and rebellion among the half-sibs. Further, the Lord told him the sword would never depart from his house.
Some blessing.
Very sad. Glad you got out of that religious institution.
That’s funny, and VERY clever.
Noo, I don’t think that would work at all. Of course, if the mistress did all the housework, laundry, ironing and took care of the kids, maybe...
Sigh. We could use another “wife” around here. I put my paying job in during the week and housework on weekends. She would have to sleep in the guest room (alone) though.
Apparently, some people around here don’t believe that women deserve the same amount of love and attention from a spouse as a man does.
PING!!

Me too..lol.
I don’t think I am going to be getting a cleaning lady ever though! I might get a new mop for Mother’s Day...That actually did happen one Mother’s Day my ex husband gave me a mop & a bucket with a wringer thing. I was so mad that on Father’s Day he got a Big Stinky Fly Trap & a pooper scooper. I get even!!! If I do get a mop I am going to whack the giver with it.
Cut off from his family by the FLDS?
What a wholesome, life-affirming faith that must be.
