Volkswagen to produce 1-Liter car in 2010, should get over 200MPG

Although you can definitely pre-order an Aptera if you're okay with space-aged design, Volkswagen is hoping to provide another option for those looking for ridiculous MPG and a little bit of normalcy in construction. Okay, so maybe the 1-Liter isn't exactly standard fare -- with its plastic / magnesium shell and all-glass roof -- but at least it packs four whole wheels and an iconic VW badge, right? According to Motor Authority, the automaker will be producing said vehicle and pushing it to market as early as 2010, and while the minuscule engine will only take you to 75MPH, it will still seat two people -- one in front of the other, though -- and get around 235MPG. No word on a price or any of that good stuff, but we're hearing that they'll only be produced in "limited numbers" whenever they're launched.

And if you hit anything with this vehicle, you will die instantly.

If they can find people to buy it, I’m very happy for them.

You know the funny thing is, when you look around during the morning commute, most cars only have one person in it. So as a commuter, the limited seating shouldn’t be an issue. I’d like to know power...sure it gets up to 75MPH, but how long? 30 seconds? No thanks.

Repotedly, they will use the advanced East German technology and call the car Trabant.

To each his own — God Bless America. That’s the beauty of freedom, granola-crunching hippies can drive whatever they want, and so can I.

If people want to drive that golf cart, more power to them. Wouldn’t pull in front of my Expedition going too slow, though — crunch! Not even sure I’d feel it under the tires.

Betcha it isn’t going from 0-60mph in less than 2 minutes unless you push it off a cliff.

H

So am I, better chances for me and mine if we collide with it on a slippery road.

Does it have a “pedal assist” like a moped?

If it’s gonna look like hte pic at this site, i’d buy one. probably no more or less safe than riding the HD, or even a moped! And even HD and moped owners would be lucky to get 200mpg!

Tell you what, come back to us when they actually produce the car at a price an average consumer can afford.

Keep hearing all these marvelous things "green" technology is suppose to produce. Only problem, the end product never lives up to the marketing and it is never anything an average person can afford.

Assuming you're not kidding, I'm assuming that one liter refers to the engine displacement. I couldn't help visualizing a pop bottle with wheels, either.

IRCC, the original 1939 “People's Car” had a 925cc/36HP (0.925L) engine. (1500cc is about 100 cubic inches.) They gradually upped the displacement to about 1800cc in the final Super Beetle.

Driving a 1000cc car on the Autobahn must be a thrill.

One question: will this one come with heat?
