When things look the bleakest, it's always good to remember that hope springs eternal, that in life things can turn on a dime. A good lesson for us all, politically or otherwise.

At 73,he probably should take the lump sum rather than the 20 year payout.

Good fortune for the gas station that sold the ticket, too:
"West Metairie Shell...will get $25,000 for selling the winning ticket. The station...lost its roof during Katrina, and the store was looted."

At 73,he probably should take the lump sum rather than the 20 year payout. That would depend on whether he wants to let his heirs inherit it and the tax implications. If it were my $97 million, I think I'd set up educational trust funds for all my grand children and great grand children. The payments from a 20 year payout are enough to live at a very nice standard of living and still be able to pass on a lot of money in an estate.

Some folks opt to convert their remaining payouts to travelers' check and take it with them when the time comes.

Great story, Good luck to this man and his wife. Good luck dogding the parasites who are about to barrage him demanding welfare.

Any word from the tens of thousands of people who lost homes in Katrina and hundreds or thousands of dollars in the lottery?

Unless you click on the link and read 'the rest of the story' ... you will miss the most important part:
"Asked why he waited so long to turn in the winning ticket, Hunter said he wanted to wrap up some of his construction work and finish his outstanding contracts. In fact, Hunter's wife Dianne said he was still at work this week."
Mr. Hunter is a good, good guy. ;)

Agreed. If he’s smart he’ll move far away and keep a low profile.
