Perhaps Ericsson and Nokia do some lobbying..

Still, one can’t deny restored Lutheran work ethics, a political orientation towards Conservatism, Capitalism and heavy investments in R&D, education and infrastructure instead of Socialist experiments do function.

As a well educated son of Scandinavia, I’m not surprised of our recent achievements (and no, Sweden and Finland has no oil).

We are a Socialist swamp no longer. But we’re still too Socialist.

What about the north sea oil revenues? You’re not called blue-eyed Arabs for nothing!

One of the more important reasons in Scandinavian telecom dominance is standardization, ie. Legislature declared around '80 that "you will use NMT standard and like it". The Standard in question was updated later to GSM along "common carrier" requirements which made roaming possible ("your network will have to be connected to your rival's network and your network will have to carry competitor's calls (for pay, of course) if no competition station is available").

The subscription to cell service provider was separated the phone from service (just swap SIM card, no "locked" phones mandated by service provider), which allowed increased competition between phone manufacturers and service providers. Hopefully this policy will not change with new GPRS...
