BMW 2.0L Diesel Named Best New Engine for 2008

BMW’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel (earlier post) was named Best New Engine of the Year 2008 at the tenth annual International Engine of the Year Awards at Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany (6-8 May). The top six contenders in this category included two twin-turbos (one gasoline, one diesel), a V10 with 580bhp, the world’s first diesel boxer engine (from Subaru), and a fresh version of Volkswagen’s TSI.

BMW’s 3-liter Twin Turbo gasoline engine was named International Engine of the Year 2008, as it was last year. (Earlier post.) The judges of the awards noted that the back-to-back win also confirms turbocharging as the power generator of choice. Seven of the twelve award categories were taken by turbocharged engines.

The Prius 1.5-liter engine won the Green Engine of the Year Award. The Green Engine Award replaces the Best Fuel Economy Category, which the Prius engine also won last year. This year, however, the Prius edged out the BMW 2.0-liter diesel combined with start-stop system by only three points (269 to 266).

OOOOOOOOOO....LS9 :bow down: King of teh FAST!

Red Badger, where’s the article on the GM 4.5L duramax diesel. I was a little disappointed with reading yesterday’s news on autoblog that it will have urea injection :-(

That’s the engine that beat the Prius in a fuel economy test from London to Geneve. And the Prius was having trouble keeping up.

Too bad our Federal government geniuses have raised the price of diesel fuel to the point where there’s no longer an economic advantage to diesel engines.

Rubbish. Have you seen the trunkfull of hardware they have to add to make that engine run clean? Including the urea tank that you have to replenish on a regular basis? These things are like the “hybrids” - great as long as the system is 100%, an expensive disaster to service when anything goes wrong. Anybody had to change the battery in their Prius yet? What was the Haz-Mat fee ?

No, I’ll stick to my gassers, thank you. I might buy a Diesel motorcycle someday, just for giggles. Yes, there is one.

Which Federal department is setting oil prices?

Or are you just referring generally to Congress not letting us drill for domestic oil?

Sorry, a pet peave I developed listening to BOR. In the end, nobody sets the price for fuel other than us. The price on the pump is just a market guess at what we are willing to pay plus taxes.

The Gummint raised the price by mandating ultra-low-sulpher diesel, which is the only thing these Euro-Diesels can run on.

We don’t have near enough refining capacity for the stuff, which is why the price is so high.

Probably 90% of the diesels on the road today don’t even NEED the stuff, but they are forced to buy it anyway, just so rich lawyers can buy these BMWs to show themselves off in.

I was referring to the ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel requirement. See Supercharged Merlin’s post.

I think using urea means less of other noxious technologies for emission control that impact performance and mileage.

It’s a tradeoff - only time will tell if it’s a good one.

I agree about the “hybrids” comment, but there is no HazMat fee for the Prius batteries - they can be recycled with 95% of the material reclaimed.

Which motor? If you mean the new 4.5L duramax, yes, you can. There are conversion engine mounts for LS1s into LT1 F-bodies. The 4.5 will fit, the problem is the custom work to get it to fit with motor mounts and what not.
