Navy releases McCain's military record

WASHINGTON (AP) - John McCain's Navy record boils down to a series of unadorned paragraphs that bestow upon him some of the nation's top military honors.

The Navy recently released McCain's military record - most of it citations for medals during his Navy career - after a Freedom of Information Act request by The Associated Press.

McCain was awarded a Silver Star Medal for resisting "extreme mental and physical cruelties" inflicted upon him by his captors from late October to early December 1967, the early months of his captivity, according to the citation. The North Vietnamese, according to the Navy, ignored international agreements and tortured McCain "in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes."

His captors tortured him and held him in solitary confinement. Still, he declined an offer of early release until those who had been at the prison longer than him were let go.

That decision earned McCain a Navy Commendation Medal. Although McCain was "crippled from serious and ill-treated injuries," he steadfastly refused offers of freedom from those holding him prisoner. "His selfless action served as an example to others and his forthright refusal, by giving emphasis to the insidious nature of such releases, may have prevented a possibly chaotic deterioration in prisoner discipline," the citation says.

McCain attended the U.S. Naval Academy from 1954 to 1958, and was commissioned as an ensign in June of that year. He retired in April 1981 with the rank of captain. In that time he received 17 awards and decorations. Besides the Silver Star Medal, McCain also received the Legion of Merit with a combat "V" and one gold star, a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Bronze Star Medal with a combat "V" and two gold stars.

I’ve listened to Rush for years and have never heard him slap down prescription drug addicts, either. I think you’ll agree there’s a very large difference between someone who says, “I was given vicadin for my bad knee and now I’m addicted” versus someone who says “I thought heroin would be really cool but now I’m addicted.”

And an admiral or general in your family tree. ;)

True. When I arrived at UPT (pilot training, USAF style) one of the first forms we filled out was a list of relatives in the grade of O-6 or GS-15 and above.

One guy in my class had a dad who was a retired USAF Colonel fighter pilot. He hooked so many rides (including one where he entered the overhead pattern in the WRONG direction) that anyone else would have been gone. He finally quit on his own.

Another guy I worked with a few years later crashed 1 plane and nearly crashed another. His granddad was a former Army Chief of Staff.

My last “duty” was back in 94 when I stood my final quarterdeck watch...

I no longer have duty, only a desire to be free of the chains the collectivists have slipped over me.

Once you have cancer it doesnt matter if its a little or allot. You have to kill it before it kills you. Socialism is the cancer and both Mcain AND Obama are socialists. It doesn’t matter who wins we are still f-—ed if we don’t get rid of the socialist cancer. Im thinking a little chemotherapy is in order.

What this means is that I really dont care who wins, just like I wouldnt care who pulls the trigger on the gun pointed at my head. It just doesnt matter, now does it?

Its become obvious to me that the goal of republicans is NOT to kill off socialism. Instead, they have adopted socialism and learned to accept it as a given. I am NOT compatible with that and therefore Im NOT compatible with the republican party any more than the democrat party.

Call it “hard right wing” all you f-—ing want. I am anti-socialism. I am anti-slavery. Being that you choose to classify me in the way you do, it must mean that you are pro-socialist, pro-slavery.

“extra-chromosome far righter—anologous to historic figures such as Gobbles or Tojo, who chose suicide when their beloved fuhrer and emperor were defeated.”

More liberal speak.

Again.. Only because your slow...

The republican party has adopted socialism. That puts me at odds with ANYONE the party puts up. Just as Im against ANYONE the democrats put up. This isn’t about Mccain, this is about the fact that the republican party is no longer anti-socialist and therefore is putting up candidates that are not anti-socialist. (meaning they are putting up candidates friendly to socialism). What this means is that socialism will continue to advance in this country. Just like a cancer.

If you're calling me pro-socialist, then during your Navy years you must have referred to damage control parties as "pro-torpedo." Or perhaps you called them "pro-flooding" because they used fire hoses.

This year--at worst

--we have a choice between FDR and Jimmmy Carter. I'll take FDR any day, thanks.

BTW, I’m all good as far as McCain and his first Missus go. It would be great if every GOP pol had a marriage like the Bush’s (either set) but that just ain’t the way it is, and it sure isn’t any excuse to put one of the chihuahuas in the White House.

Since when was altruism a feature of socialism? Since when was altruism something conservatives reject?

Not really! Try living with a loved one that you see totally destroyed by what was legal and prescribed because they cannot handle what life deals out. It does not matter the substance, whether the drug is heroin or oxycontin, delautid, meth, or valium, substance abuse is substance abuse.

Paradoxically, I am very libertarian and anti-harsh punishment, preferring treatment instead of jail terms for addicts; but, at the same time, extremely hard-line for persons who manufacture or distribute adictive narcotics for profit.

I know first-hand the pain that addictive narcotics cause families and I can lay some of that pain at the feet of doctors who too often write prescriptions for others in the medical profession because of a "professional courtesy" misconception about believing such to be more cautious about abuse.

Kerry signed three Form 180s releasing his records in May/June 2005 to three sympathetic reporters, but not to the general public.

...I just don’t see how the American people will prefer as President the bad-mouthing, entitled and elitist Harvard grad who’s never sacrificed the least thing for his country (spare me the community organizer crap), over this man. If they do, then this aint the United States of America anymore.

Bob Dole vs Bill Clinton.

I think Obama will be the nominee, but there will definitely be a floor fight...and riots.

Hillary will drop out before the convention. The Dem convention will be a love fest with Hillary, Obama, Richardson and Bill holding hands singing Kumbaya and pledging to stop a third Bush term. You can count on the Dems being united coming out of their convention.

Actually, I would call DC teams anti-torpedo. I would call the operations guys who refused to take evasive maneuvers, pro-torpedo.

I think you’ve misundertood me. I’m not saying the damage is any different, I’m saying the moral intent is vastly different. One is intending to deal with a medical problem, the other is choosing a path that is illegal and known to be self-destructive.

After that, an addict is an addict, but that first step is crucially different from a moral standpoint.

You raise a good point about McCain divorcing.
Let's check it out a little bit.
Do a little research and you will probably find out that after returning most How’s wound up divorcing.
They are completely different people, and are carrying a lot of personal baggage.
