Our enemy says he is fighting jihad warfare to extend the Islamic faith; the basis of that claim rests on his exegesis of Quranic and Islamic Law injunctions. Irrespective of whether we or other Muslims accept or deny the legitimacy of his claim, if that is his stated doctrine, then that is the doctrine we must study and comprehend. That is the doctrine that will provide the indicators and warnings of future threats, that is the basis of our threat model.
That fact that other Muslims do not engage in violent jihad bears no relevance to our problem set or the analysis of those who do; it is a distraction and ancillary information that does not contribute to the threat model or understanding the enemy.
The fact is we have already so nuanced this war that we have failed to complete those required analyses. Our national security strategies and plans are so nuanced now as to be useless in terms of understanding the threat, defining it, clarifying it, modeling it. Read them, see if you can distill the enemy and orient on a clear objective. Even in our own strategic planning documents we admit to ourselves that we don't agree on the threat.

How bout we just call them barbarians and pigs?
The gub’mint is trying to “make nice” with the 99.9% of muslims who are not actively trying to make war on us.
Unfortunately, they miss the fact that the “jihad” enjoys support among a significant minority of that group and pretending otherwise doesn’t change things.
why the PC though?????
what is behind that?
who are we kowtowing to????
The only good Muslim,
is an apostate Muslim.
Alive or dead.
It would be so much easier to see what the article was about if the excerpt contained it’s beginning.
Well, wait till Barry Hussein Obama raises the green (or black) Islamic flag over the White House. This is just setting the stage.
Sufis may count as a moderate form of Islam, but as 2 million out of 1.2 billion, they don’t really count.
Several of us here have been sounding this note for a long time.Even McCain, for all his tough talk does not seem to understand the problem, or does not care to admit to understanding it. I think the only hope we have for dealing with this before we start to lose cities is for George W to surprise hell out of us all and actually do the job on Iran. If he leaes it for the next administration then things will just fall apart piecemeal until we are backed into a corner and finally come out with nukes or until we are islamized.
“Sufis may count as a moderate form of Islam”
Many (esp. the Wahabist and Sunnis) Muslims would consider the Sufis already apostates so that seems to coincide with your idea.
I’m afraid your picture of the world is inevitable. God help us.
To all: this article is worth a full and careful reading. Mr. Meyers' analysis is both dispassionate and well-reasoned. When you choose to view the Islamicist project free of emotionalism or wishful thought-projection, the conclusion one reaches is most unsettling.
Worse, the advent of a Democrat Presidency with a strongly Democrat Congress in the US would virtually ensure the return of an emotional, reflexive, and apologetic foreign policy. Our adversaries know this instinctively and are waiting patiently for their moment.
