Bikini Car Wash causing controversy
KENS 5 Eyewitness News ^ | 05/08/2008 | Selena Hernandez

A controversial car wash is generating more than just suds.

Some parents and church members say they want the Bikini Car Wash kicked to the curb and out of their neighborhood.

With women bikini-clad and bearing more than just sponges, at a newly opened car was on South Flores, you can get your car hand-washed, waxed and dried, complete with a view.

Even those without cars go to soak in the sight of the sultry suds.

"I got a bike for now, but pretty soon I'm going to get me a car," Adam Tagle said. "I think it's wonderful."

Yet not everyone agrees.

"Nobody wants it there," one woman said

This naughty novelty has some South Side residents in a lather.

"It's just not an appropriate place for this type of business," Harlandale United Methodist Church member Barbara Wright said.

The Bikini Car Wash sits within feet of an elementary and middle school, and right across the street from Harlandale United Methodist Church.

Kids were seen gawking at the women washers.

"Before we opened, we went around asking permission from the church. They gave us permission to go ahead and do it. The pastor said that he was all for it," Jackie Pichardo said.

"I do find that very surprising, and in fact, I called the minister after hearing that, and he said he did not do that," Wright said.

Although some parents and church members say they want to clean their community of this controversial car wash, those at the business say it's just clean fun.

"It's not so much the people who are working there, it's the people they are drawing that scares me," one woman said.

"We're out in the open, doing everything in the open, so somebody would be able to see real quick if we're doing something wrong," Pichardo said.

The business has its proper permits. Meanwhile, the pastor of the church has sent a letter stating his concerns to the city

I wish we had one of these here in town. Maybe my son would take his car in to get cleaned once in a while.

homosexual pastors....Methodist

Our General Conference, the only official voice of the UMC, just concluded its once every four year meeting last week.

We have always believed, and we have as our WRITTEN rule, that "homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching." We have as a written rule that "homosexuals with not be appointed in our churches" as pastors.

This recently concluded General Conference made those statement MORE STRICT by insisting that marriage is only between one man and one woman, and that sex is legitimate only within a legitimate marriage.

I don't see how we can nail it down any more clearly than this.

There are about 30% in the LEADERSHIP of the church who are radical and will demonstrate radically against this. Our church rules make it hard to remove anyone without full-fledged trials with rights of the accused as extensive (or moreso) as those found in the our legal system.

Remember, though, that only one body speaks for the UMC -- the General Conference.

Did they reaffirm their position on an outright ban on handguns this time?

I don’t think the NOW gals are into guys. But I wouldn’t be opposed. Not crazy about the Speedos but my car could use a good washing. So I would be willing to make the sacrifice.

No need to enact any legislation.

"Need" is seldom the reason that legislation is enacted. Try, "pandering for votes".

No, they want Janet Reno in wet leather.

LOL

I wonder how many MUSLIMS took their cars to that car wash yet??

The great thing about the product is that it can be remarketed for anyone.

Standing ovation for the faithful within the United Methodist Church.

Thanks for the clarification. I ran into a pastor a few years back that seemed confused; maybe it was me.

Good for them! But I do know of lesbian pastors who have their partners with them, so let’s hope they do something about that.

Those who violate our rules do so with full knowledge of what they do. They are radicals who are attempting to take our denomination the recent directions chosen by the PCUSA and the ELCA. They are failing.

One thing to remember is that there is NO ONE in charge of the Methodist Church. It’s only voice is the General Conference that meets once every 4 years for 10 days.

There is no pope, no president, no overseer who can issue orders or directives. There is no one who can hire or fire.

Each bishop covers about a state-sized geographic region, and he answers to no one. If he/she chooses is one of the radicals or is in bed with them, there is no effort to bring violators to trial.

But this is no different than the independent church down the street from a 2nd independent church. Church A cannot tell church B what to do. They cannot force Church B to fire a pastor or kick out a member. They have no authority.

That’s true. I was a Methodist for many years myself and a lot of the time it really depended on who was the Pastor. Some were liberal, some were truly born again. I was a counselor for 10 camps at a Methodist camp and truly found purpose there with those kids. I also went later, when I had left the church, to the Walk to Emmaus, another fantastic experience. Most of the congregations around here are small and there’s not much life in the churches. Mine closed down and another group took over and calls itself a community church now.

I rejoice that the radicals are failing. Hallelujah. I will always love those little churches that I was a part of over the years.
