BURBANK, Calif. (AP) Former President Jimmy Carter said Wednesday that delegates from Florida and Michigan should not be counted at the Democratic National Convention because they disqualified themselves, and he warned of a disaster if party insiders try to wrest the nomination from the candidate with the largest number of votes and state victories.
An attempt by so-called Democratic superdelegates to override the popular vote would be an almost unacceptable thing, Carter told Jay Leno on The Tonight Show.
If a candidate has a clear edge in votes, state-by-state wins and delegates claimed at caucuses and primaries, I cant imagine that the superdelegates would go against them, Carter said. It would be a catastrophe for the party.
Carters comments came a day after the North Carolina and Indiana primaries, in which Barack Obama padded his delegate lead over Hillary Rodham Clinton. In the tight race the judgment of superdelegates elected officials and party insiders who can vote as they like at the partys August nominating convention will almost certainly be decisive.
The former president appeared eager at first to steer clear of the disputed primaries in Michigan and Florida, saying their delegations ought to be seated for sure in 2012.
But when pressed by Leno if those delegates should participate in 2008, Carter said, No, they disqualified themselves.

I can’t believe that washed up old coot is the world authority on whose votes gets to count and whose doesn’t.
i’m surprised jimmah al-carter didn’t suggest that a hezbollah delegation get seated at the rat’s convention.
They are not ‘voters’. They are participants in an internal Party affair known as a nomination. The two major political Parties used the State Treasury and State general election machinery to conduct this internal Party process, which gave the State the ability to choose the date of said ‘primary’ election. The DNC and the RNC set the time and dates at which they will allow delegates to be selected.
There is a conflict between the State Legislatures which set the date of the political Party primary (remember, he who foots the bill has the last word) and the National Party organization. The DNC and the RNC have the last word until their respective Conventions meet, at which time the delegates on the floor may vote their wishes as to the seating of the Democrats Florida and Michigan delegates and super-delegates...

They decided to be 'RATS!
Please stop insulting horses! I’d rather stick my nose in a horses ass than be in the same room with Carter.
The democrat party said that if Michigan and Florida held early pirmarys their delegates would not be seated. Everyone agreed to this including Hillary. When things appeared to not go her way she decided this was not fair. Do you see a pattern here?
Jimmy Carter: “Let’s forget about the delegations from Michigan and Florida, but let’s NOT forget to seat the delegations from Hizbullah and Hamas — THEY are important Democratic Party constituencies.”
“What exactly did the voters do to disqualify themselves???? “
They registered as democrats?!! :-)
A little extreme but I can't argue with that.
ha ha, GMTA!! I hadn’t read the thread and made a similar post....... good show!
And I've suddenly had a new revelation: Florida and Michigan SHOULD be counted. The Dim leadership needs to find a way to brook a compromise that will make everyone happy and full of joy.
Oh, and . . . world peace.
Jimmah is a pretty dumb guy. Is he trying to make Obama lose in November?!?
"If you call this a life."
Obama doens't need Carter's help for that.
To be such a total waste of space, he sure thinks he’s important.
Like Clinton he is looking for a legacy that will never come.
I love your tagline.
What happened to the good old days when presidents died shortly after leaving office?
Jimmy Carter is actually brain-dead and has been for several years.
Thank you. LOL
