In an abrupt political reversal, Democratic state Senate leader Don Perata said Wednesday he is ending his campaign to recall a Republican senator.
How much good Perata's sudden announcement will do is unclear. The recall against Sen. Jeff Denham of Merced already is on the June 3 ballot and pamphlets have been sent to voters.
In a statement, Perata said he was ending the recall campaign "in the spirit of putting politics aside to solve problems."
Perata had orchestrated the recall because Denham had angered him during last year's budget stalemate, which lasted roughly seven weeks after the start of the fiscal year.
Perata thought Denham, a moderate Republican, would provide one of the GOP votes needed to reach the two-thirds threshold required to pass the budget in the Senate. Instead, Denham sided with his Republican colleagues, who were concerned the spending plan would lead to a multibillion dollar budget deficit.
California faces a deficit estimated between $13 billion and $20 billion for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Both parties have feared another deadlock in the months ahead over whether taxes should be raised to close that gap.
In his statement, Perata said he was dropping the campaign against Denham because he wanted to seek a measure of unity between the parties.
"This is my call - and my best judgment - about how to stop the long, slow slide into another long stalemate," Perata said. "I hope it pays off. Because the same old rhetoric won't get the job done."
Denham campaign spokesman Kevin Spillane did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press seeking reaction.

One more load of demRat that blowed upin the dems face. and .. One more example of why California is so skrewed up.
The priorities of the raving liberals is chaos, first , last and always... and dueling with th Gubinator. They could care less about the hard working legal taxpayers of California.
Grandstand! Grandstand! Grandstand!
Uh huh..I believe that.

PeRata’s boots will be tough boots to fill as he gets term-limited out.
Wow. NAZI tactics from CA rats.
Perata should be jailed.
So in other words, Perata and the Democrats need GOP votes to raise taxes and figures Denham is just the liberal (”moderate”) scumbag to provide one of those votes, despite the fact that Denham stood tall last year. Is that about it?
Bring on Perata’s indictment... it is past due.
and I would think that Denham is now some kind of freaking hero since he stood up to Perata and his political assasins for refusing to raise taxes.. Maybe Denham will rethink his desire to be a ‘moderate’ and just start sticking with his party on a regular basis.
And you know Perata wouldn’t have dropped this campaign if there was any reasonable chance that it would have worked. Cuz adding another socialist vote in the CA Senate would be too valuable a prize for him to walk away from if it was truly possible. But the idea of attacking a Senator who refuses to agree to a multi-billion $$ tax hike sounds like Soviet Russia politics (which fits in well in Sacramento nowadays).
in a nutshell. Yes.
Heck, he has still has Maldonado but needs more support to get the 2/3’s vote needed,, a couple sessions back, a guy named Juergensen (then appointed to a Veterans Affair slot later) crossed over a couple budgets back and voted with the dems, he got kicked to the curb next election, I guess Perata thinks it’s an entitlement or something .
It’s sacrilege to stand up to the liberals and their agenda, yaknow. Rat bastards!
Arnold is a disgrace to those who voted for him it seems to me. Playing the old “Switch-eroo” on what was promised and what was passed.
He should be through out of office just for signing the .50 Cal. BMG ban!!!
He should have stuck to movies ... now I can't even bring myself to watch any of his movies ... the miserable hypocrite!
It seems like there are always a small handful of GOP scumbags who turn traitor. I remember a few years back there was a notorious Republican named Keith somebody - - I think he was a doctor - - who could always be depended on to give the rats a vote they needed to screw the working taxpayers of California.
What’s the view from ground zero? Will the Republicans hold firm this year?
FRegards,
LH
Maybe you stumbled onto something - - maybe Perata feared that Denham might be replaced with a smashmouth conservative Republican and figured he better leave well enough alone.
Whats the view from ground zero? Will the Republicans hold firm this year?

So far, so good. The new Senate GoP leader Cogdill has said no no, and heck no and the GoP Assembly leader is also ready to rumble.. The Gub’ll sign anything he can get, imo. It will be up to the Pubs to stand off the plethora of assaults to come which is Nothing new for many of them.
buttt, We’ll see.
Ha Ha! Perata got slapped down by his fellow dems! There is no way they wanted the statewide publicity of this story highlighting the fact that it was their free spending ways that put the state in this hole just at the time when they’re trying to wheedle a few votes from the Republican side of the aisle for a new, supersized, tax and spend budget.
He may be yet. PeRATaGATE still isn't over.
On the subject of the Recall, I assume Perata saw the poll numbers and decided to try a little post-partisanship on his own. He still has to pass a budget this year, and he needs Republican votes to do it..
Perata would come out on a belcony far above the north entrance and taunt our crowd, giving us the "thumbs down" and such and snearing at us like he'd really like to have given us the middle finger!!!
He’s gonna look good in stripes. ;-) maybe not this year or next, but it will happen. If it doesn’t then the system has wasted a lot of money and time for nought, and proved that some pigs are more equal than others.
