WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, and Democratic Committee Chairs and Members held a news conference this afternoon to discuss proposals to combat skyrocketing energy prices and create a New Direction for energy independence. Below are the Speakers remarks, as prepared:
Two weeks ago, I sent the President a letter urging him to sign legislation that would help American families with the rising price of gasoline.
This week, we heard back from the Administration. Instead of forward-looking solutions to address these challenges, the President offers two ways of dealing with the energy crisis.
Drill and veto.
Drilling is the failed energy policy of yesterday that has brought us record gas prices today.
By threatening to veto legislation that will help families with the price at the pump, the President is forbidding us to move our nation to a 21st century energy policy.
Congress has worked with the President to increase fuel economy standards for cars and trucks for the first time in 32 years, dramatically boost efficiency standards for buildings, lighting, and appliances, and invest in homegrown biofuels.
Congress will continue to move forward with a forward-looking energy agenda. We ask the President to work with us again.
Before the Memorial Day break, we will be bringing to the floor a comprehensive energy tax package that promotes research and development and promotes efficiency.
This week, we heard from economists who said we would help reduce prices for consumers by temporarily suspending the fill of oil into the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. In 2000, when we did this, the price of oil decreased immediately - and by the end of the year the price of oil went from $30 to $20 per barrel.
Today, led by Chairman Markey, we will send a letter to the President again calling on him to temporarily suspend filling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. But if the President does not act, Congress will with legislation.
Before Memorial Day, we will move updated and expanded legislation to hold OPEC accountable for price-fixing. It will provide additional resources also to prosecute price fixing by the oil industry.
The Farm Bill, which will be on the floor next week, will promote the next generation of cellulosic biofuels such as switchgrass and increase the oversight authority to detect and prevent manipulation of energy prices.

I really wish that were true...
Is it at least half true?
(drill)
No one is drilling, all I have heard is a bunch of whining and no progress. Just like the rats like it.
Drill and veto, I like it.
Whereas hers is talk and talk some more.

Pelosi’s an ignorant slut who has no recommendations for the long-term energy fix. Her brain (or what’s left of it) is awash in botox and SF toxic rot.
Nah, just a dream sequence from some wacky sit-com. Only if...
And DemoGenerate tactics are ‘Block and Civilizational Suicide’
She left out the word "not", as in "NOT drilling is the failed energy policy of yesterday that has brought us record gas prices today."
Pelosi: Tax the Oil Companies and Burn our food supply
“Drill and Veto” beats “Don’t drill and cry” any day.
I guess that would make her policy and the rest of the clowns like her, obstruct and treason.
Nancy, the 21st century energy plan has to include drilling in ANWR. Get your head out of the sand ya friggin Rat!

I really wish that were true...
And hers is generating green house gases.
What is so wrong with drilling on our own land to get ourselves independent of Arab crazies? This is a no-brainer! We take charge of our oil on our own lands so that we won’t be held hostage by Arab fanatics. ANY good businessman would know you can’t have ONE major source or you have no control over your costs. Secondly, when you have a spend-every-thing-you-can congress, Vetoes are the only recourse the President has now. The Republicans squandered their majorities and now a left to veto. That’s all Bush has now. What a shame! It could have been so grand to stop the earmarks, the waste, the graft, but no, they must like being a minority. Where are all the real statesmen?
Pelosi’s policy has made us hostages of Chavez.
No Drill.
No New Refineries.
No New Nuclear Plants.
Bet she wins reelection by a huge margin.
The Crips and Bloods in action.
This is a perfect opportunity for the GOP in the Senate. Tell Reid that any plans will not get past the Senate unless drilling is attached to the bill. If the bill then passes there is no way that anyone can force OPEC to open their books and a speculator is exactly that which is not against the law. As for the taxes, let them raise it on the oil companies and then they will pass it on to the consumer but at least there could be drilling.
Right. Because flooding the market with supply is what causes high prices... Where the hell did she get her degree, Sears and Roebuck?
Considering that the price of a barrel of oil was $58 when the Democrats lied and macaca’d their way to control of Congress, and it is around $120 now, less than a year and a half later, “drill and veto” sounds pretty bloody good to me!
