Federal authorities will consider whether to designate another delta fish for protection under the Endangered Species Act after a sharp population decline last year.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said Tuesday it will review the status of the longfin smelt to determine whether it is a threatened or endangered species.
The 4 inch-long fish is native to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Last year it registered its lowest population count in four decades of monitoring.
Environmental groups had requested a review in August.
The longfin's cousin, the Delta smelt, has been listed as a threatened species since 1993.
He who smelt it, delta it.
And what is causing these fish to near extinction? If the causes are natural, and not man-made, their extinction is just in the natural order of things. Let them go. Or transplant ‘em or somethin’.
a little beer batter and a frying pan full of butter,, yummmmy.
There are some large delta water pumps that the little buggers can’t get around so the smelt legal aid agency found a sympathetic fed Judge who has ordered the state to shut the pumps down for months in the summer.
Fish over people, no question there, right? lol
The salmon count is down on the entire West coast also. Somebody is messing with us.
Hard to believe that some simple engineering solution can’t fix the pump problem.
