Shellshocked House Republicans got warnings from leaders past and present Tuesday: Your partys message isnt good enough to prevent disaster in November, and neither is the NRCCs money.
The double shot of bad news had one veteran Republican House member worrying aloud that the partys electoral woes brought into sharp focus by Woody Jenkins loss to Don Cazayoux in Louisiana on Saturday have the House Republican Conference splitting apart in everybody for himself mode.
There is an attitude that, I better watch out for myself, because nobody else is going to do it, the member said. There are all these different factions out there, everyone is sniping at each other, and we have no real plan. We have a lot of people fighting to be the captain of the lifeboat instead of everybody pulling together.
In a piece published in Human Events, the Republicans onetime captain, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, warned his old colleagues that they face real disaster on Election Day unless they move immediately to chart a bold course of real reform for the country.
And in a closed-door session at the Capitol, National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told members that the NRCC doesnt have enough cash to save them in November if they dont raise enough money or run strong campaigns themselves.
Although a top House Republican brushed aside Gingrichs broadside as hype from a has-been who desperately wants to be a player but cant anymore, the harsh words from Cole were harder to ignore.
It was a pretty stern line that he took with us, said one House Republican.
If these dopes wanted to get re-elected they should stop spending like drunken sailors and bring up oil drilling on ANWAR and OffShore every day.
There, fixed it.
Will they be punished like Rick Santorum was??
This is lunacy. Why would Republicans be worried about losing to RATS? The only answer would be that we have an electorate so stupid they can't figure out that these high energy prices are the fault of Democrats who do everything they can to prevent us from having more supply.
RATS are so stupid they believe that a "windfall profit tax" will help drive down the price of gasoline when in fact it will do just the opposite. Think gasoline is too cheap? Elect RATS.
They can’t.
The Democrats will call them mean names and they live in fear of that.
From my observations it goes like this: Dig a deep hole with failed policies you previously endorsed, then claim you have absolutely no responsibility for those failed policies or the aftermath, then claim to have the solution to the problems you previously created, all while voting for a regular and substantial pay raises and other bennies like leased Cadillacs, cradle to grave health care for you and your spouse, along with your full salary until you breathe your last, and, of course, you pass legislation that makes your political foundations and slush funds legal because this is where you launder all your ill gotten gains from lobbyists. All this is done on the backs of the American tax payers.
That is modern politics in a nutshell. Did I miss anything?
People here need to chill out. We won some recent house elections in VA and OH and lost others. It was just a couple years ago that the Democratic Party was ‘dead’. Now, it is the GOP. We have cycles out all of our recent leadership with the departure of Delay and Hastert. A new group will rise soon.
Neither party is going to die, there is not going to be one party. We may or may not lose seats in Nov - I would predict a slight loss in both houses this round. Thing is, most districts are strongly Dem or Rep and we lost a whole bunch of the swing districts in ‘06 that we had held for a decade or more. We have good candidates running in a number of districts, including some honorable Iraq veterans. We’ll win some of those back and probably lose some others.
The Presidential race will dominate this cycle and what happens in the House will reflect that. If Obama wins the primary, some sectors of Dem voters will not be out in force for the Dems this time.
It is too early to tell anything. 2006 was a reflection of the publics changing opinion of Bush. He is not on the ballot this time, so the race will about different issues than 2006.
‘bama president and congress.
rush limbaugh and his stupid ideas, and
john mccain and his bob dope campaign of 1996
gone.
no conservativism. that’s the problema, folks.
there may be 50 people on this forum at night—of which 36 are mormons supporting war against the state of texas, 2 catholics, 3 baptists, ...
Every time I see Pelosi leading Gingrinch around by the nose in that commercial, I realize how low the Republican party has fallen.
Expect to see a lot of that commercial between now and November. It is one of the most effective tools the Democrats have against the Republicans and Conservatives. Gingrinch failed when he had the chance to lead. His media-pandering embrace of Global Warming and the Demcraps show just how desperate he is to get back in the limelight, and how stupid it would be to take any of his advice seriously.
One of the few statements here in FR that makes any sense. We have Freepers who believe that because Republicans aren't conservative enough, we should elect Democrats. That will fix it.
This Republican thinks exactly the opposite: the party is lost unless Newt is returned to a position of deserved leadership.
I'd happily dump the so-called "Social Conservatives" and "Values Voters" and the other destructive Evangelical factions to return the party to one of conservative (and not religious) principles and values.
Barry Goldwater predicted that the Religionists would destroy conservatism, the Republican Party, and maybe American politics altogether.
And here we are, with McCrazy leading our party and movement.
Did you miss anything?
Only one thing-—allow massive illegal immigration by supporting total amnesty and tell people that”these are all God’s children and we have a responsibility to care for them and to help them”. Juan McCain 5/5/08.
It seems to me that socialists disguised as conservatives have done the damage. Religion has nothing to do with it, it’s a willingness among Republicans to expand government.
bttt
Pardon me, but your ignorance is showing.
You don't understand Newt's position on "global warming" at all, do you.
What does that mean?
